『おんや〜』

　夜中の１１時頃、私がいつものようにマックブックでネットサーフィンをしながら人生の貴重な時間をドブに捨てていると、『電池がもうすぐ切れまっせー』というサインがディスプレイに出ました。あれ、電源のコードはつないであるのに、おかしいな、と思って調べてみると、充電中、又は充電済みのランプが消えています。つまりコードがコンセントにささっていない状態です。しかも、先ほどから何やらちょっと部屋がコゲ臭いのが気になっておりました。どうせルームメイトが何か料理をしてて焦がしたのだろうと思っていたのですが、電源コードを見てドビックリ。白いコードの一部が焦げて黄土色になっております。どうやら長年の酷使がたたって、中で断線して漏電していたようです。危ねー、危ねー。気がつかなかったら火事になるところでございました。

　さて、電源コードをコンセントから抜いて、なんとか部屋が火の海にならずに済んだのですが、当然コンピューターは使えません。ま、ない物はないでしょうがない。朝になったらコードを買いに行こう。と、一度は思ったものの、使えないとなると、使いたくなるのが人間というものでございます。しばしの思案のあと、『そうだ、５番街のアップル・ストアーは２４時間営業だぞ』と思い出してしまったから、さあ大変。すでに時計の針は１１時半を差しています。私はここで自分でも思わぬ行動に出ます。一平はベッドから起き上がると、急いで服を着替え、すぐさま駅へと走り出したのでありました。なんでしょう、普段はスーパー出不精の私に似合わない、この行動力は。それはあたかも１６歳の乙女が恋という呪文にかかってしまい、『神様、私にチョッピリ勇気を下さい』と言って家を飛び出したかのようでした。駅へと走っている時、一平には山下達郎の『クリスマス・イヴ』が聴こえてきました。いや、ウソはいけませんね。そんな綺麗なモンではございません。私は薬の切れたシャブ中患者のように、手を振るわせて白目を剥きながら、マンハッタンへと向かったのでございました。うわごとのように、コココ、コードくれよ、とつぶやきながら‥‥‥‥

　アップル・ストアーに着くと電気が煌々と輝き、ドアも開いております。開いてて良かった。中に入ると、真夜中をとっくに過ぎているのに、ざっと３０人ぐらいの若者がおりました。私が言うのもなんですが、何もこんな時間に来ないでもいいんでないかい？ま、若者がわけの分からん行動を取るのは、今も昔も同じことでございます。私は若者たちの間をそそくさと通り抜け、店員をつかまえて、さっそく目当ての品を手に入れました。これや、これが欲しかったんや。私はまたまた若者たちをよけて外に出て、アップル・ストアーを後にしました。１時間後、家に着いた私は、無事にまた一文にもならないネットサーフィンに興じ、人生をドブに捨て続けることができましたとさ。

　めでたし、めでたし。

"What the ...?"

Around 11pm, I was, as always, wasting my precious time of life on internet surfing with my MacBook. Then, "Battery Low" sign popped up out of blue. The power cable should have been connected but I saw the light of the power cable was not lit, which meant the power cable was not connected. Mmm? I also was noticing for a while that there was a slight smell of something burning in the air. I was thinking that my roommates burnt something again while cooking. I was so surprised when I saw the power cable. A part of its white cable turned dark yellow and it was literally burning hot. It looks like the wire inside was cut after years of overuse. That was a close call. I almost started a fire.

I unplugged it and avoided the inferno, but that makes me unable to use the computer. Well, can you guess what I did? I all of a sudden remember that the Apple retail store on 5th Ave opens 24 hours, so I hit the street immediately, got there and grub the stuff, then came back around 2am and continued wasting my life on computer. I realized that I was a junkie!

　いつものタイランド・カフェでのギグです。なんか、この日はドラマーのイアンとグルーブがガッチリと決まった日でした。

The regular gig at Thailand Cafe. Ian the drummer and I were somehow playing the groove so much tightly than usual. Something was right today. What a great feeling.

International String Trio @ Liberty House

　インターナショナル・ストリング・トリオでニュージャージー州ジャージー・シティで結婚式のギグです。ハドソン川の対岸にマンハッタンの摩天楼が一望できる、大変に景観の素晴らしい所でした。秋晴れの太陽の元、この綺麗な景色を見ながら、気持ちよく演奏することができました。（業務連絡：キーツ、エイジさん、自分たちの写真を撮るのを忘れてしまいました。ゴメンなさいね）

A wedding gig in Jersey City, New Jersey with International String Trio. This place has the view of million dollars. You can see all the sky scrapers of Manhattan on the other side of the Hudson River. We played outside under the autumn sun looking up this great view of New York. (To my fellow musicians, Keats & Eiji. Lost in admiration of the scenery, I forgot to take the photos of ourselves. Sorry!)

　タマラ、一雄さん、ゆうきちゃんに私の４人はリッチモンド・カウンティー・オーケストラで共に数々のコンサートをくぐり抜けてきた戦友でありました。そんな中、一雄さんとタマラが自分たちそれぞれのバンド、すなわちWaFooとMCCEを合わせてジョイント・コンサートをしようという話になり、長〜い月日が過ぎて、ようやく日の目を見ることになったわけです。ただ、２つの全く毛色の違うバンドを合わせるのは難しい事も多々あり、もう崩壊して大惨事に終わることもあれば、片方のスタイルが強過ぎて、もう片方が完全に飲み込まれてしまう場合もあります。方やクラシック、方や日本音楽とロックとポップとジャズとフュージョンその他の混ぜ合わせ。さて、どうしたら双方のバンドのスタイルを崩さずに、しかも美しく演奏できるでしょうか。これが我々の課題でした。

　しかし蓋を開けてみれば、全く違う２種類のアンサンブルではありましたが、驚くほどスムースに連結し、エナジーを損なうことなく、かつ美しく演奏できました。いいですね。なんか、他の可能性まで見えたようなコンサートでした。お客さんにも気に入って頂けたようですし、何より我々自身が最高に楽しかったです。

　このジョイント・コンサートはこの『一回限り』ではなく、長いコンサート・シリーズの『一回目』という気がします。さっそく二回目の準備に取りかかろうと思います。

　タマラ、キーツ、クラリス、楽しいコンサートでした。ありがとうございました。

Tamara, Kazuo, Yuuki and I have fought side by side in Richmond County Orchestra for several years. Kazuo and Tamara had this special idea for the longest time. Maybe we can join forces and we can both profit from it. Kazuo's Japanese project, "WaFoo" & Tamara's classical trio, "Musical Chairs Chamber Ensemble (MCCE)" came together and performed. Sometimes, the process of merging two different genres of music ends up in a complete train wreck, or one side is totally disappeared and sucked into the other side. Either way it's painful. How can we combine two of quite different types of music beautifully (without catastrophe)? One is classical, the other is Japanese-influenced rock/pop/jazz/funk/fusion etc.

Seems like we have nothing in common, but surprisingly this unusual combination landed us in the whole new world with the view of the paths to a virgin soil. The audience at the concert liked us, and, more than anything, we loved ourselves playing together.

I have a good feeling that this concert is the first episode of the long interesting and exciting series of creating the new genre of music. We are going to get ready for the second episode.

Tamara, Keats and Clarice, we really enjoyed playing with you guys. Thank you very very much for the great concert.

　友人のドラマー、ルー・ペットの演奏を聴きにニュージャージー州のメトゥチェンに来ました。ルーさん、２曲ぶんぐらいしか見る時間がなくてゴメン。すぐに別の友達のライブを見に行かなくちゃいけなかったんだよね。

I came to Metuchen, New Jersey to listen to my good friend and the great drummer, Lou Petto. I'm sorry Lou that I could not stay longer and had to leave after only a couple of tunes. I had to go to catch the show of another friend of mine, and, yes, I caught the last tune of his band.

　タイランド・カフェでいつもの楽しいギグでございます。この日はこのあと、ささやかながらハラのお父さんがイタリアへ帰る送別会が開かれました。なんか知らないのですが、この時ドラマーのマルコと、バンドにおけるベースとドラムの関係について深イイ話になってしまい、熱く語り合ってしまいました。

The usual fun gig at the Thailand Cafe. We had a bit of a good-bye party for Hara's dad who were going back to Italy. I don't know why but Marko the drummer and I got into the topic on how bass and drums can be tighter and we really heated up on that.

　WaFooで図書館でのコンサートのあと、すぐにそのままオーガニックレストランのチュットリーソでギグをしました。今頃ヨーロッパのどこぞでウハウハで遊びほうけているであろうユタカを尻目に、働き続ける我々でありました。

We did another gig with WaFoo at Tuttoriso the organic restaurant right after the concert at the library. We are working so hard in here while Yutaka the drummer is somewhere in Europe enjoying the life and maybe drinking a cocktail or something at a resort.

　WaFooのドラマーのゆたかが他のバンドのツアーで東の空へと飛んで行ってしまったので、向こう一ヶ月は４人だけでコンサートをすることになりました。

　スタッテン島にあるリッチモンドタウン図書館でのコンサートです。ここでコンサートをする時はなぜかいつも大雨か大雪で、この日もその例にもれずに大雨でしたが、ありがたい事に多くのお客さんがこの大雨の中を会場まで足を運んで下さいました。

Yutaka the drummer of WaFoo scored a tour from another band and had flown away and disappeared to the East sky, so we are going to play with just four of us for next one month.

It was the concert at the Richmondtown Library in Staten Island, New York. Nobody knows why but every time we play at this library, the weather is always either big rain storm or big snow storm. It was raining so hard as we expected but so many people showed up for the concert. Thank you to all of you!

　ブルックリンのファーダというフレンチ・レストランでのギグでございます。サリナちゃんもハラもマルコも、いつものようにエネルギーが溢れる演奏でございました。

The gig at French Bistro called Fada in Brooklyn. As always, lots of energy was emanating from Sarina, Hara and Marko.

ギターのハラのお父さんが遠くイタリアから息子を訪ねてきました。家族の仲が良いのは本当に羨ましいかぎりです。 Hara's dad came all the way from Italy to see his son. I was so envious of the tightness of Hara's family.
