Mr. Yutaka Kobayashi

　ピアニストの小林裕さんがレコーディングでニューヨークに来てました。裕さんと奥さんのゴエさんは私が大学時代にずーっとお世話になりっぱなしだった方々で、音楽のことのみならず、ご飯をごちそうになったり、人生相談をしてもらったりと、本当に親代わりの存在でした。オーストラリアのド田舎から上京してきた私でしたが、日本では『初任給は親に食事をごちそうするもの』という知識ぐらいは持っており、念願の初ギグでお金が入った時には、すぐにお二人と一緒に中華街に行ってごちそうさせていただきました。それぐらいお世話になった方々で、初任給で一緒にご飯に行けた時は私も本当に嬉しかったです。それから裕さんとゴエさんが日本に帰られるまでたくさんの事を教わりました。一緒に演奏していて面白かったです。

　あれから１０年もたったでしょうか。去年、ニューヨークにアレンジャーとしてレコーディングに来ていた裕さんと久々に再会をはたし、今年もまたお会いする事ができました。今回もお疲れのところなのに、私の人生相談にのって頂きました。本当にすみません。どうも裕さんとゴエさんには昔から甘えが出てしまう自分がいます。『一平ちゃんには一平ちゃんにしかできない音楽とか仕事があるんだからさ』という言葉には救われました。地道に頑張って、笑われても気にしないで我が道をいきたいと思います。あと、つまらないことでブログを休止していた私だったのですが、『ブログ書いてよ。こっちも安心するからさ』と言っていました。押忍、絶対に書きます。

　裕さんとゴエさん、日本で体に気をつけてお過ごし下さい。

I had a bit of reunion with my old friend, Yutaka Kobayashi. When I was at the music college in Boston, he and his wife, Ghoe, helped me a lot. They were more than just friends but like my parents. In Japan, we had a custom to take our parents out for a dinner when we get the first salary. Guess who I took out to a nice Chinese restaurant in Chinatown after I got my first gig. I learnt a lot from him till they went back to Japan. I really enjoyed playing music with him too. I will never forget their kindness.

Yutaka knows that I have been having trouble deciding which direction I should take on my music. He said "there are the music and the work which only Ippei can do." I was saved by this word.

Yutaka-san and Ghoe-san, I wish you good health and good luck.

Session @ Enrique's

　エンリケのウチで楽しいセッションでございます。この日はいつものエンリケ・ハネイネと及部恭子さんに加えて、トランペットのレックス・サミュも来てくれました。終始、アバンギャルドのフリージャズを弾いたセッションでございました。フリージャズというとデタラメと思うかも知れませんが、それは半分正解ですが、半分間違いです。

　私、今に始まったわけではないのですが、昔から自分の音楽の方向性に思い悩んでおりまして、何をやっていいか分からないまま、仕事を続けています。それがこういうフリージャズをやっていると、自分のやりたいものが見え隠れするんです。今のところ分かっているのは、私という人間はどんなジャンルの曲をやるにしても、優しい音楽が好きで、形式だけに捕われた音楽やプレイヤーは大嫌いらしいということです。まあ、そのうちまた何かつかむと思います。私はこのやり方でいいのですよ。まっすぐ歩くだけでは見つけられないものも多いのです。

A fun session at Enrique's. Adding to the usual members, Enrique Haneine and Kyoko Oyobe, we had our good friend Lex Samu on trumpet. It was a great free jazz session. Maybe people think free jazz is the music of nonsense. Well, it's right answer somewhat but not entirely right. I'll write about it some day.

I have the trouble which I have had for a long time; I don't even know which direction I want to take on my music. This problem has not been solved and I just keep working, but each time I do a free jazz session, I can see some kind of a hint to solve my problem. What I have found out so far is that, in any genre of music, this person, Ippei Ichimaru, likes a gentle music and dislikes the music and musicians that emphasis too much on forms. I guess I'll find something else in me as long as I keep doing the free jazz session. This is my way of life and I am fine with this. There are a lot of things in life which you cannot find by just walking straight.

Enrique Haneine Sextet @ Ram's Head Inn, Shelter Island, NY

　この日はロング・アイランドの先にあるシェルター・アイランドという小島で結婚式のギグでございました。エンリケと共にニューヨーク市から３時間離れたリゾート地へ車を走らせました。フェリーに乗って島に着くと、そこは見事な景勝の地でございました。残念ながら観光をしている時間はなかったのですが、バンドメンバーがセットアップをしている間にできるだけ写真を撮ってきました。それが上記の写真です。

The wedding gig on the small island called Shelter Island which is located on the tip of Long Island, New York. Enrique and I drove together for three hours to the resort. Once we get off from the ferry, I just saw so many of picture perfect in everywhere. Unfortunately I did not have time to look around but I took as much pictures as possible while the other band members were setting up; I put those photos above.

　この日はラテンジャズ主体のギグでした。普段はこのバンドは３人でやっているのですが、今回は６人の大所帯で、音の厚みがいつも以上のうえにそれぞれのプレイヤーの腕も素晴らしく、本当にミュージシャン冥利に尽きる演奏ができました。エンリケ、そしてバンドメンバー達、ありがとう。

We played Latin Jazz mainly for the night. We usually play with three musicians for Enrique's band but we double the number for this gig and we had six people in the band. Not only the sound was much thicker than usual but also the level of the musicianship of each players were really high, so I, as a musician, had a blast. Another great gig. Thanks Enrique and everybody.

Enrique Haneine Trio @ Moonstruck

　この日はエンリケのラテンジャズ・トリオでムーンストラックというレストランでギグでした。パワフルでハイエナジーの曲を３時間ほど弾き倒しました。いつもこのバンドでやる時は何も自分の感情を抑え込まずに、全てを解放して演奏できるので、大変楽しいです。

The restaurant gig with Enrique's Latin Jazz Trio at Moonstruck. We played three full hours of powerful and high energy stuff from the beginning to the end. With this band, I don't have to hold back anything and can liberate my feeling, so the gigs are extremely fun!

Pork saute with miso

　豚の味噌焼きを作りました。大大大成功でございました。ほーっほっほっほっほっほ！

I just made a pork saute with miso. It was super bloody excellent. It was a big success. Ha-hahahahahaha.

Baked rice balls

　今日は大好物の焼きおにぎりを作りました。でも、オーブンの出力が弱かったのか、ここまでできるのに１時間ぐらいかかってしまいました。うーむ、次はフライパンで焼いてしまおうかな。

I made baked rice balls which are my favorite, but I think the oven range I have does not have strong enough power, so it took me about one hour to cook (usually 15-20 minutes). Oh well, maybe I should fry it with a pan next time.

　この日は私が所属しているWaFooというバンドでリハーサルがあったのですが、WaFooの初期メンバーである丹羽剛さんが遊びにきてくれました。今は日本に拠点を移して活動されているのですが、今回はビジネストリップでニューヨークに来たとのことです。リハで一緒に何曲か演奏したのですが、相変わらず丹羽さんのソプラノ・サックスの音色は素晴らしかったです。丹羽さん、日本でも頑張って下さい。そして、またニューヨークに遊びに来てください。

We had a rehearsal with WaFoo which I am a member of, and had a special guest who is one of the founding member of WaFoo and the great soprano sax player, Tsuyoshi Niwa. He moved back to Japan several years ago and came to New York this week for the business trip. Tsuyoshi played a few tunes with us and the tone of his soprano was beautiful as I remember. Tsuyoshi, I wish you the best of luck in Japan. Come to New York more often!

Session @ Enrique's

　ボストンからニューヨークに帰ってきて、エンリケのウチで楽しいセッションをしました。いつもの及部恭子さんとエンリケ・ハネイネと私の３人でフリージャズのセッションをしました。なかなか、こういう音楽をやる機会がないので、楽しかったです。

I came back from Boston and had a fun session at my buddy, Enrique's place. It was a free-jazz session with the usual members: Kyoko Oyobe (Piano), Enrique Haneine (Drums) and me. I don't have much chance to play this kind of music so I enjoyed a lot.

International String Trio @ International Tennis Hall of Fame

　この日はロード・アイランド州のニューポートにある国際テニス殿堂で、結婚式の後の昼食会のギグでした。天気が良くて気持ちいいギグでございました。ここでも何度か仕事をしたことがあるのですが、コートから何から整然としていて、仕事に来るのが楽しみな場所の一つです。そして『テニスの殿堂という大それた場所で仕事ができる！』という優越感もちょっとあったりします。

We had an After-lunch gig of a wedding at International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. The weather was great and the gig was really enjoyable. I have played in here several times and everything is so well organized and clean, so I am always looking forward to come here and play good music. Besides the greatness of the establishment, I can't deny having this sense of superiority that I'm performing at the hall of fame of tennis. Ha-ha.

この翌週にチャンピオン・カップという、すでに現役を引退した往年の名プレイヤー達の大会がここで開かれたそうです。マニア垂涎のマッチアップだったらしいのですが、私が知ってる名前はジョン・マッケンローぐらいですかね。 On the week after the gig, the champion cup was held at very same place. The champion cup is the meeting of the former retired champions and I've heard that tennis funs are drooling to watch these matches. I'm sorry but the only name I recognize is John McEnroe.

Gift from my aunt

　先日、日本から送って頂いたプレゼントをようやくお世話になっているトルストイ一家に渡す事ができました。彼らも本当に喜んでおりました。いつも気を使っていただいて、ありがとうございます。

Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University

　ギグの後、お世話になっているトルストイ一家とアーノルド樹木園に散歩に来ました。ハ〜、なーんの趣向もなしに公園を歩いたに過ぎないのですが、私にとってはかけがえのない一抹の安らぎの時でございました。

After the gig, we went for a walk to the arboretum with Tolstoy family who was kindly letting me stay at their place in Boston. Well, we just walked in the park without any purpose but it was priceless relaxing time for me.

International String Trio @ State Room

　この日はボストンのステイト・ルームで結婚式のギグでした。ここは海に近い高層ビルの最上階なのでボストン・ハーバーの先の先まで眺望がきき、私が知るかぎりボストン屈指の美景を見ることができます。私が大好きな仕事場の一つです。

The wedding gig at the State Room in Boston. The place is located on the top floor of the sky scraper built close to the ocean, so you can catch sight of the whole Boston Harbor. As far as I know, the venue has one of the most beautiful view in Boston and I always love working in here.

ファニュエル・ホール・マーケット・プレイスです。端から端まで歩くだけで５分はかかる巨大な施設なのですが、相当な高さからこの写真を撮っているので、私の安カメラのファインダーにもすっぽり収まってしまいます。 This is The Faneuil Hall Market Place. It is a huge establishment which takes about five minutes to walk across from one side to another, but even my dirt-cheap camera could take the whole view of it because I was shooting this photo from way up high.

ボストンの観光名所であるカスタム・ハウス・タワーです。地上１５１メートルで長い間ボストンで一番高いビルでした。今はマリオット・ホテルになっているそうです。 This is Custom House Tower, one of the places of interest in Boston. The height is 496ft (151m) and it was the tallest building in Boston for a long time. I have heard that the building is now the Marriott Hotel.

偶然、通った超巨大貨物船。その大きさに、思わずシャッターを切りました。今の貨物船ってこんなに大きいものなんですね。前述したファニエル・ホールと同じぐらいの長さがありますよ。家に帰ってこの船の事を調べてみると、日本郵船所属の船舶だと分かりました。おお、日本の船と知って、もう一度ビックリ。 The super gigantic cargo ship leaving the Boston Harbor. I did not know that cargo ships are this mountainous and as huge as the Faneuil Hall. I was surprised again when I found out it was actually a Japanese ship.

非常に気に入ってしまった一枚。実は逆光なのにフラッシュをたくのを忘れたミスショットなのですが、逆に我らジャズ・ミュージシャンのシルエットがいい味を出してます。 I just love this photo. This pic is actually a miss-shot that I forgot to set the flash on for the backlight, but I am liking the silhouette of us jazz musicians.

International String Trio @ Endicott College

　この日はスラーバのバンドで、マサチューセッツ州のビバリーにあるエンディコット大学に来ました。大西洋に面した大学の敷地で結婚式のギグだったのですが、学校とは思えないくらい立派で趣のある建物でした。

The wedding gig at the Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts. The ceremony was held in front of the elegant building with true character which does not look like belongs to a school.

あいにく天候がくずれて雨になってしまったのですが、晴れていれば素晴らしい景観が見渡されたことでしょう。 Unfortunately it was raining a bit, but if it was a fine weather, the view from the place must be wonderful.

この日のメンバーはギターでバンドリーダーのスラーバ（左）とバイオリンのクレイトン（右）でした。 The members of the gig were Slava on guitar as well as the band leader (left) and Clayton on violin (right).

昔はそんなに好きじゃなかったアーティチョーク。最近はなぜかこれが美味しく感じるんですよね。歳をとるにつれて味覚が変化してきているようです。 I did not like artichoke before but nowadays it is becoming more and more tasty to me. I guess my sense of taste is changing as I get older.

Back Bay Fens - Rose Garden

　この日は１日オフだったので、車を修理に持って行っている間、バック・ベイ・フェンズという公園で散歩をしておりました。この公園は松坂や野茂で有名なボストン・レッドソックスのホーム・グラウンドであるフェンウェイ・パークから目と鼻の先で、私の母校のバークリー音楽院からも近い場所にあります。私自身、この公園の近くで４年間ほど住んでいました。でも、大学生の頃は学校で忙しくて、あんまり来ませんでしたねぃ。

　久々にこの公園に行くと、鴨の群れが道路を渡っていたりしていて、都会には似つかぬ、なんとものどかな風景でございました。

I had a day off, so I went for a walk to the Back Bay Fens before picking up my car from a mechanic. The park is close to the Fenway Park, the home ground of Boston Red Sox, and also is close to my old college, Berklee College of Music. I used to live two minutes away from the park for four years, but I was too busy to come to the park and spent time when was a college student.

I came here for the first time in a long time. I saw a flock of geese walking across the street. It was a nice peaceful scene in a city.

　そして一番の発見はバラ園がある事でした。私、前述したようにこの公園から歩いて２分の所に４年も住んでいたにも関わらず、こんな素晴らしいバラ園があることを、ついぞ知りませんでした。まったく、お恥ずかしいかぎりでございます。

The biggest surprise for me was the Rose Garden. As I wrote I had lived by the park for a long time but I have never known such a great rose garden existed. Oh well, I'm so ashamed of myself...

Hara Garacci Group in Boston, MA

(I had not renewed my blog for a month to apologize to the person whom I violated his/her privacy. I am restarting my blog again as of today. I apologize to the people whom I unwittingly gave any troubles or worries. I would like to put some entries between Aug 6th and Sept 6th even just pictures.)

　この日は友人のハラの仕事で、チャールズ川の河口付近に位置する、とある法律事務所のパーティーで演奏しました。大あらしの予報が出ていたのにもかかわらず、ビルの屋上での屋外パーティーだったので風雨の心配はしていたのですが、まあ雨の方は大丈夫でした。ただ風にあおられてPAスピーカーが倒れて来たのには驚きました。この日の演奏はいつものスラーバと共に旧友のヘナートとの久々の演奏でした。

My buddy Hara gave me a party gig for a law farm in Boston. We heard the news that a storm was approaching, so I was worried about rain and wind because it was an outside gig. Well, it did not rain much but we sure had strong wind and one of the PA speaker was knocked down by it while we were playing. Oh boy, I though my heart was going to stop.

Nonetheless, it was a fun gig with Slava and my old friend whom I have not played with for months, Renato.

　今回もスラーバとアンナの家にお世話になってます。サーシャをだっこさせてもらいました。もう、爆裂に可愛いです。

I'm staying at Slava & Anna's. They let me hold their new born daughter, Sasha. She is just super cute!!

International String Trio @ Seaport World Trade Center in Boston

　ワタクシ、本日より６日間ボストン方面でギグでございます。まあ出稼ぎでございますよ。貧乏旅芸人の私は安賃金のために働いて働いて働きぬかねばならないのですよ。ああ、野麦峠。ああ、女工哀史。ああ、蟹工船。私はこの肺結核に犯された体を引きずって、ベースを車に積みこんだのでありました（うそよ）。

　そんな実写版プロレタリア文学の私は、今日も労働基準法を尻目にボストンへと旅立ったのでありました。今回の旅も仕事が目白押しで、目の回る忙しさになる事でしょう。基本的人権の尊重はどこ吹く風でございます。まー、とは言え、今日の仕事自体は楽しいギグでした。今日は去年もやった薬品業界の見本市での仕事です。その出品者の一つの企業に雇われて、ブース内で演奏しました。ようするに我々が客寄せパンダになるわけですね。その会社は製品開発するさいに使う精密機器を売っているらしいのですが、なんでも一台１億円ぐらいするらしく、それを去年は７台ほど売ったと言っておりました。そんな高価な機械をドーンと売ってるなんて、１年に五千円の仕事を２００本やって綱渡りをしてる私とは、測る物差しが違ってますね。フンッ、ブルジョアがなんぼのもんじゃい。
　ま、客寄せパンダの役割は十分したらしく、方々のブースから我々の演奏を見に来ていただきました。また来年も雇って下さいね。ブルジョアを否定するような発言をしてしまいましたが、そんなことありません。ブルジョア大好きです。お金持ち大好きです。お金が好きです。現金がいいです。一平は腹が減りました。

I will be in Boston for next six days doing corporate gigs and wedding gigs. Basically I'm becoming a migrant worker for a while. I am a stone-broke itinerant musician and I'll do whatever I have to do. Oh boy, This is going to be one tough trip, but also by doing this short tour and making a bit of a saving, I will be able to stay home and practice what I love.

Today's gig was at Seaport World Trade Center in Boston. There was a conference of pharmaceutical companies going on in there. We are hired by one of the exhibitors whom hired us last year. We'll be an attraction at the booth and it worked last year. The company is selling a cool automated machine which is used to develop new medicine. They were showing the video of it and it was so cool. The machine has some kind of a robot arm and it picks up the containers, shakes them, mixes them, empties them and what not. I had fun just watching the video. They said that the machine costs a million bucks and they had sold seven of them last year. Wow, I'm working hard and doing about 200 of 50-buck gigs a year to make both ends meet. It's totally different scale.
I think our job was well done and attained our first objective which was becoming the eye-catcher for the people walking by. I hope they'll hire us again next year too.
