Enrique Haneine Sextet @ Ram's Head Inn, Shelter Island, NY

　この日はロング・アイランドの先にあるシェルター・アイランドという小島で結婚式のギグでございました。エンリケと共にニューヨーク市から３時間離れたリゾート地へ車を走らせました。フェリーに乗って島に着くと、そこは見事な景勝の地でございました。残念ながら観光をしている時間はなかったのですが、バンドメンバーがセットアップをしている間にできるだけ写真を撮ってきました。それが上記の写真です。

The wedding gig on the small island called Shelter Island which is located on the tip of Long Island, New York. Enrique and I drove together for three hours to the resort. Once we get off from the ferry, I just saw so many of picture perfect in everywhere. Unfortunately I did not have time to look around but I took as much pictures as possible while the other band members were setting up; I put those photos above.

　この日はラテンジャズ主体のギグでした。普段はこのバンドは３人でやっているのですが、今回は６人の大所帯で、音の厚みがいつも以上のうえにそれぞれのプレイヤーの腕も素晴らしく、本当にミュージシャン冥利に尽きる演奏ができました。エンリケ、そしてバンドメンバー達、ありがとう。

We played Latin Jazz mainly for the night. We usually play with three musicians for Enrique's band but we double the number for this gig and we had six people in the band. Not only the sound was much thicker than usual but also the level of the musicianship of each players were really high, so I, as a musician, had a blast. Another great gig. Enrique Haneine Trio @ Moonstruck

　この日はエンリケのラテンジャズ・トリオでムーンストラックというレストランでギグでした。パワフルでハイエナジーの曲を３時間ほど弾き倒しました。いつもこのバンドでやる時は何も自分の感情を抑え込まずに、全てを解放して演奏できるので、大変楽しいです。

The restaurant gig with Enrique's Latin Jazz Trio at Moonstruck. We played three full hours of powerful and high energy stuff from the beginning to the end. With this band, I don't have to hold back anything and can liberate my feeling, so the gigs are extremely fun!

Pork saute with miso

　豚の味噌焼きを作りました。大大大成功でございました。ほーっほっほっほっほっほ！

I just made a pork saute with miso. It was super bloody excellent. It was a big success. Ha-hahahahahaha.

Baked rice balls

　今日は大好物の焼きおにぎりを作りました。でも、オーブンの出力が弱かったのか、ここまでできるのに１時間ぐらいかかってしまいました。うーむ、次はフライパンで焼いてしまおうかな。

I made baked rice balls which are my favorite, but I think the oven range I have does not have strong enough power, so it took me about one hour to cook (usually 15-20 minutes). Oh well, maybe I should fry it with a pan next time.

Our friend Tsuyoshi Niwa

　この日は私が所属しているWaFooというバンドでリハーサルがあったのですが、WaFooの初期メンバーである丹羽剛さんが遊びにきてくれました。今は日本に拠点を移して活動されているのですが、今回はビジネストリップでニューヨークに来たとのことです。リハで一緒に何曲か演奏したのですが、相変わらず丹羽さんのソプラノ・サックスの音色は素晴らしかったです。丹羽さん、日本でも頑張って下さい。そして、またニューヨークに遊びに来てください。

We had a rehearsal with WaFoo which I am a member of, and had a special guest who is one of the founding member of WaFoo and the great soprano sax player, Tsuyoshi Niwa. He moved back to Japan several years ago and came to New York this week for the business trip. Tsuyoshi played a few tunes with us and the tone of his soprano was beautiful as I remember. Tsuyoshi, I wish you the best of luck in Japan. Come to New York more often!

Session @ Enrique's

　ボストンからニューヨークに帰ってきて、エンリケのウチで楽しいセッションをしました。いつもの及部恭子さんとエンリケ・ハネイネと私の３人でフリージャズのセッションをしました。なかなか、こういう音楽をやる機会がないので、楽しかったです。

I came back from Boston and had a fun session at my buddy, Enrique's place. It was a free-jazz session with the usual members: Kyoko Oyobe (Piano), Enrique Haneine (Drums) and me. I don't have much chance to play this kind of music so I enjoyed a lot.

International String Trio @ International Tennis Hall of Fame

　この日はロード・アイランド州のニューポートにある国際テニス殿堂で、結婚式の後の昼食会のギグでした。天気が良くて気持ちいいギグでございました。ここでも何度か仕事をしたことがあるのですが、コートから何から整然としていて、仕事に来るのが楽しみな場所の一つです。そして『テニスの殿堂という大それた場所で仕事ができる！』という優越感もちょっとあったりします。

We had an After-lunch gig of a wedding at International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island. The weather was great and the gig was really enjoyable. I have played in here several times and everything is so well organized and clean, so I am always looking forward to come here and play good music. Besides the greatness of the establishment, I can't deny having this sense of superiority that I'm performing at the hall of fame of tennis. Ha-ha.

この翌週にチャンピオン・カップという、すでに現役を引退した往年の名プレイヤー達の大会がここで開かれたそうです。マニア垂涎のマッチアップだったらしいのですが、私が知ってる名前はジョン・マッケンローぐらいですかね。 On the week after the gig, the champion cup was held at very same place. The champion cup is the meeting of the former retired champions and I've heard that tennis funs are drooling to watch these matches. I'm sorry but the only name I recognize is John McEnroe.

Gift from my aunt

　叔母上様、

　先日、日本から送って頂いたプレゼントをようやくお世話になっているトルストイ一家に渡す事ができました。彼らも本当に喜んでおりました。いつも気を使っていただいて、ありがとうございます。

I could finally hand over the gifts which you sent me long time ago to the Tolstoy family. They really liked the gifts and asked me to send their regards. Thank you as always for thinking and taking care of me.

Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University

　ギグの後、お世話になっているトルストイ一家とアーノルド樹木園に散歩に来ました。ハ〜、なーんの趣向もなしに公園を歩いたに過ぎないのですが、私にとってはかけがえのない一抹の安らぎの時でございました。

After the gig, we went for a walk to the arboretum with Tolstoy family who was kindly letting me stay at their place in Boston. Well, we just walked in the park without any purpose but it was priceless relaxing time for me.

International String Trio @ State Room

　この日はボストンのステイト・ルームで結婚式のギグでした。ここは海に近い高層ビルの最上階なのでボストン・ハーバーの先の先まで眺望がきき、私が知るかぎりボストン屈指の美景を見ることができます。私が大好きな仕事場の一つです。

The wedding gig at the State Room in Boston. The place is located on the top floor of the sky scraper built close to the ocean, so you can catch sight of the whole Boston Harbor. As far as I know, the venue has one of the most beautiful view in Boston and I always love working in here.

ファニュエル・ホール・マーケット・プレイスです。端から端まで歩くだけで５分はかかる巨大な施設なのですが、相当な高さからこの写真を撮っているので、私の安カメラのファインダーにもすっぽり収まってしまいます。 This is The Faneuil Hall Market Place. It is a huge establishment which takes about five minutes to walk across from one side to another, but even my dirt-cheap camera could take the whole view of it because I was shooting this photo from way up high.

ボストンの観光名所であるカスタム・ハウス・タワーです。地上１５１メートルで長い間ボストンで一番高いビルでした。今はマリオット・ホテルになっているそうです。 This is Custom House Tower, one of the places of interest in Boston. The height is 496ft (151m) and it was the tallest building in Boston for a long time. I have heard that the building is now the Marriott Hotel.

偶然、通った超巨大貨物船。その大きさに、思わずシャッターを切りました。今の貨物船ってこんなに大きいものなんですね。前述したファニエル・ホールと同じぐらいの長さがありますよ。家に帰ってこの船の事を調べてみると、日本郵船所属の船舶だと分かりました。おお、日本の船と知って、もう一度ビックリ。 The super gigantic cargo ship leaving the Boston Harbor. I did not know that cargo ships are this mountainous and as huge as the Faneuil Hall. I was surprised again when I found out it was actually a Japanese ship.

非常に気に入ってしまった一枚。実は逆光なのにフラッシュをたくのを忘れたミスショットなのですが、逆に我らジャズ・ミュージシャンのシルエットがいい味を出してます。 I just love this photo. This pic is actually a miss-shot that I forgot to set the flash on for the backlight, but I am liking the silhouette of us jazz musicians.
