WaFoo Fall Concert @ St. Peter's Church

　WaFooで秋季コンサートがありました。今回はCDリリース記念のコンサートも兼ねており、いつもよりも力を入れたコンサートになりました。私にとっての一番の収穫は、バンドのレベルが桁違いに上がったことを確認できた事でしょうか。手前みそに聞こえるかもしれませんが、プロ・ミュージシャンの客観的な目から見ても『桁違い』というのは決して大げさな表現ではないのですよ。我々のバンド編成は特殊です。そして既成のバンド編成で演奏するのはラクです。その作られた枠を踏み越える作業に時間と労力がかかるのはハナから分かっていました。

　５年かかりました。私は『よくここまで来たな』と、演奏している途中で思わず涙がこぼれるかと思うほど感動していました。感無量でございました。

　このバンドで皆と一緒に頑張って来て良かったです。これからも丁寧に音楽を作っていきましょう。

I played in WaFoo's Fall Concert in Staten Island, New York. This concert was also for the announcement of the release of our first album. We put our hearts and souls for this concert even more than usual. The most remarkable thing for me on this concert was that I realized WaFoo was now in a completely different level. It may sound like a cheap self-glorification but it is not. Taking an objective view as a professional musician, "completely different level" is very appropriate expression. The style and the orchestration of our band is peculiar and unique. Nonetheless to say, it is much easier to play in established settings so we knew from the beginning that we would need long time and a lot of efforts to go beyond the existing limit.

Took us five years. I was thinking to myself that the band had come long way. I was moved and tears almost dropped from my eyes in the middle of playing. My heart was full.

I am so glad that the whole band members stuck together and have persevered in making this band happen. Let's keep at it and make our music beautiful.

Guchi (Some Grumbling)

So sorry.

　バーモントでのギグの後に８時間運転してニューヨークに帰ってきました。長かったっす。バーモントで日が沈んで暗くなり始めた頃に出発して、ニューヨーク近辺に来た時はすでに朝のラッシュが始まってました。しかもこの前に８時間運転して現地に行って４時間働いてますからね。でもね、そんな事よりもまた降り掛かって来たのでございますよ、別の災厄が。朝からずっと大騒ぎだったのでございますよ。その全てを書いたらね、皆さんの髪の毛真っ白になりますよ。前日から続いた、この超濃縮された厄日。本当にいろいろな事がございました。『事実は小説より奇なり』です。２４時間ぶりに家に帰って来て、疲れきった私はふとある事実に気がつきました。

『昨日からまだ１日しか経ってないの？』

　この私の気持ちが分かるのはジャック・バウアーとマクレーン刑事ぐらいのもんでしょう。実はこのエントリーの更新が遅れたのはグチを書かないと決めていたブログにグチしか書けなかったので、書いては消し、書いては消しの繰り返しだったからです。ご心配をかけた親族、及び友人の方々、大変失礼いたしました。

I arrived to New York after eight hours of driving from Vermont. It was bloody long. I left Vermont when dusk was deepening and, when I was reaching New York, the morning rush hour was already starting. Of course this long-driving was after I drove eight hours to get to Vermont and worked for four hours.

These tiring things, however, were NOTHING. I had experienced several catastrophes on the top of the catastrophes I had undergone on the day before. You will cry if I write everything. Fact is stranger than fiction. That was a hyper-condensed bad day. When I came back to my place after 24 hours of absence, I just realized something.

"Only one day had past since yesterday."

Only Jack Bauer and John McClane would understand how I feel right now.

I apologize to take such a long time to renew my blog. I set a rule that I would write only enjoyable things but, for this entry, I could not write anything enjoyable and was kept writing and erasing again and again. I might be going to erase this whole entry soon. I apologize to my friends and families whom I made worried. I didn't mean to do that.

International String Trio in Vermont

　この日は朝から実にいろいろな事がありました。絶対にブログに悪い事は書かないと決めているので、ここに書きませんが、シャレにならない災難がいくつもあったのでございますよ。こういう受難の日は歯を食いしばって意地でも普通の生活を続けるのが、ワタシ流のセラピーでございます。

　さて、この日はバーモント州のカナダ国境にほど近い山間で、結婚式のギグでした。都市部からは遠く離れ、秋色が染まりつつある山の木々は、ある種、日本の平和な情景を思い起こさせるような、そんな風景でございました。何せ、とんだ厄日だった上にニューヨークから計８時間も運転してようやく出会えた景色だったので、心身ともに疲れきっていた私には、その美景が見れた喜びはひとしおでした。

　この日のギグは素晴らしかったです。森と山と湖に囲まれ、私の心には、夕日に映える雲の色や風の音までもがありがたかったです。

Lots of things happened since the morning. Before I launched this blog, I set the rules of what to write and what not to write. Not to write bad things and only write good things is one of the rules. I am not going to break that rule, but let's just say I had a pretty bad day from the start. On the day of catastrophe like this, I force myself to continue doing what I usually do like just another ordinary day. This is my therapy.

Well, we came to the wedding gig close to the Canadian border in the State of Vermont. The place is far far away from any cities or even towns, and is surrounded with the woods which is turning to the color of Autumn. The whole atmosphere somehow reminded me of the view of peaceful country area of Japan. I saw this beautiful sight after "the Ippei's worst day of the year 2008," and drove eight hours from New York, so I was exhausted both in my heart and body. It was like a big French cuisine after fasting. I was really happy to see tremendous view of nature.

The gig was great. Forest, mountains and lakes were around us. I felt thankful to even the color of cloud reflecting the setting sun and the twittering of small birds.

Rehearsal with WaFoo

　WaFooで秋季コンサートの最終リハーサルがありました。まだ三味線のことでメンバーとモメたりしていて、不安要素はあるにはあるのですが、まあ、大丈夫でしょう。音楽はね、完成型というものがない上に、メンバーそれぞれに十人十色の思考があるのですから、最後までモメるのはいたしかたない事なのですよ。楽曲の一音一音の完璧さを期するよりももっと大事なのは、『曲全体に活力とストーリーが込められているか』ということです。『曲に命が宿っているか』と言い換えてもいいです。ここを一番重視するべきだと思うのは十人十色のメンバーにあっても意見が一致するところです。

WaFoo just had the last rehearsal for the Fall concert. Although we still have a bit of an argument about my passage on shamisen and a few small things, I think we will be fine for the concert. Well, musicians argue till the last second because there is no perfect answer for music and every musician thinks differently. What is more important than pursuing the perfection of every note is that the songs have energy and stories in them. In other words, the songs have lives. We do think differently, at the same time, we all agree on that blowing the life into the music is the most important thing.

　今日はトリオと言いつつ、スラーバと二人だけでマサチューセッツ州ウースターにある、ユダヤ教系の老人ホームでの演奏です。ジャズの他にクレズマーというユダヤ教の軽快な音楽を弾いてきました。

Well, it was not really a "trio," because there were only me and Slava. Two of us came to a Jewish nursing home in Worcester, Massachusetts. We played not only jazz but also cheerful klezmar music.

　旧友マイケル・ケリーとのギグです。もう１０年ぐらいの仲ですかね。こんなに長い付き合いになるとは、お互い思いませんでしたよ。昔はマイケルと私、それに今日のドラムのブランドンと、このブログでも度々登場するエンリケと共によくツアーに出たものでした。それからマイケルが『カリスマ』というパーティーバンドを立ち上げて、エンリケがニューヨークに去り、マイケルが辞めて他のバンドリーダーになり、私もニューヨークへと行き、最後まで残った唯一の設立メンバーで最古参だったブランドンでしたが、『カリスマ』が今年、解散となってしまいました。みんな、いろいろありましたね。十年一昔でございます。このホット・ブルー・Ｑとはマイケルがまだパーティーバンドを組む前からやっていたジャズ／フュージョンのバンドです。マイケルはそのバンドでニュージャージー州のナシュアという町で毎月ギグを持っているのですが、この日はちょうど私はボストンにいたので、私もそのギグに参加できることになりました。

I played with my old friend, Michael Kelley. We have known each other for at least 10 years or so. Neither one of us thought we would become such good friends for such a long time. We used to tour a lot with Brendan, today's drummer, and our friend Enrique who appears on my blog from time to time. After a while, Michael set up the party band called Charisma --- named by Enrique by the way, and all four of us were in the band. Enrique moved to New York soon after, Michael left the band and another guy took over the band, the band got really busy, I left the band and moved to New York, Brendan remained in the band but then this year the band leader quited and the band was dissolved. Lots of things had happened in the last ten years.
On the other hand, Michael kept his fusion/jazz band, The Hot Blue Q, going which he formed even before he started the Charisma. Michael has a monthly gig with this fusion band in Nashua, New Hampshire. I was happened to be in the area today so I could participate in this gig.

　一緒に音出しすると、まだみんなでツアーに出ていた頃のことを思い出します。マイケルの弟の家に行って姪っ子たちと遊んだり、海辺のフェスティバルで演奏したり、車で移動してる途中で道に迷ったり、トイレがずーっと見つからずにみんなガマンしてて、ホテルに着いた時は全員トイレに駆け込んだ時もありました。

　みんな若かったです。喧嘩もしたし、辛い事もいっぱいあったけど、その分、楽しいことも多かった。今は全てがいい思い出ですね。今日は彼らと演奏ができて本当に良かったです。

A note after we started playing, all the memories of the time when we were touring came back to me. We went to Michael's brother's place and had a lot of fun with Michael's nieces, played at the festival right by the beach, got lost on the way to the gigs and had to go miles around, couldn't find a restroom in anywhere and when we arrived at a motel, all four of us raced into the restroom.

We all were young. We fought a bit and there were some hardships, at the same time, we had so much fun. Everything is a good memory now.

I am really glad that we could play together today.

　また二日間ほどボストンです。ボストン郊外のニュートンのユダヤ教の教会でバー・ミツバー（ユダヤ教の１３歳の成人式）のパーティーでした。けっこう盛大なパーティーで１５０人ぐらい来ていたのではないでしょうか。子供用にゲーセン並みのビデオゲームが３台も並んでおり、その他にも遊び道具がいろいろと揃っていました。

　私の１３歳の誕生日といえば…………まだ日本にいて中学１年生の頃ですね。あ！思い出しました。私は当時ブラスバンドに青春を燃やす若き獅子で、ユーフォニアムという小型のチューバを吹いておりました（『午後の紅茶』のCMで蒼井優さんが『イッツ・ア・スモール・ワールド』を吹いている楽器がユーフォニアムでございます）。ハ〜、今思えば、あの頃が一番純粋に音楽を楽しんでいた時でしたねぃ。今でこそ、こんな『なんちゃってミュージシャン』という変わり果てた姿になってはおりますが、中１の頃は恥ずかしいほどの純粋さで、半ば狂ったように美しい音楽を追い求めておりました。私はブサイクで勉強もできず、女の子にもモテない、思い出してもクソ面白くもない青春を送ったのですが、そんな中でたった１年間の光輝く時期、自己催眠どころか自己洗脳をして音楽だけを愛した時でした。ああ、懐かしいですねぃ。さて、話題を戻しましょう。問題のその年の誕生日なのですが、確かトランペットのかわいい先輩とかトロンボーンのかわいい先輩から、なにか貰った記憶があります。（なぜこんな事を覚えているのかと言うと、私の３４年の人生においてかわいい女の子から何かもらったのは、この時と高校の時にオーストラリアに留学した時の２回だけだからです）。はて、何を貰ったんだっけかな？うーむ、さすがに２１年も経つと思い出せんわ。シャーペンとかだったかな？何を貰ったにしても、すんごい嬉しかったのは覚えてます。

I'll be in Boston for next two days. Today, I went to a synagogue in Newton, Massachusetts for a Bar Mitzvah (Jewish 13th birthday) gig. It was unexpectedly a huge party and I think there were 150+ guests in there. The entertainment section was very impressive too. Three musicians, that's us, were playing nice Jewish music all the time and there were video games and small basket ball game and air hockey thing and what not.

Well, I can not stop thinking how my 13th birthday was like. I was still in Japan and was in the freshman year in a junior high school in Tokyo. Yes, now I remember. I was a member of the school brass band, playing the euphonium which is the down-sized tuba. Come to think of it, that was when I was enjoying music the most innocently in my life. I was insanely longing for beautiful music. I was an ugly and not bright kid which made me pretty unpopular among the girls, and I spent bloody painfully boring youth. The year when I was 13, however, was my only shining year of my youth, was the year when I only love music by almost self-brain-washing myself. Oh, I look back on it with nostalgia. Well let's go back to the topic of this paragraph, my 13th birthday. I think I remember the band mates gave me some presents. I remember the pretty girl who plays trumpet and another pretty girl who plays trombone gave me something. (I remember this vividly just because I only have two experiences that I was given something from pretty girls in my life: at my 13th birthday and at my farewell party when I went to Australia as an exchange student). Huh, what were the gifts? No wonder I can not remember because it was 21 years ago. Was that a mechanic pencil? I don't remember what it was but I do remember I was extremely happy.

　プライベートパーティーでニューヨークのソーホーにある、とあるアパートに来ました。これはただのパーティーではなくバラック・オバマ上院議員の後援会のパーティーでした。何を隠そう、ハラはオバマ氏の熱烈な支持者で、この日もパーティーに来ていたゲストの方々と政治の話をしていました。私も今度こそ民主党に勝ってもらいたいです。オバマ氏はそこそこの支持率は集めているのですが、まだまだ予断を許さない状況です。１１月４日の投票日まであと一月半。このままリードを保ってオバマ氏が当選することを祈ってます。

We came to a private residence in Soho, NYC for the party of the Barack Obama supporters. My friend Hara is a big supporter of Sen. Obama and he was talking about politics with the guests all the time at the party. I, too, support Democrats and really wish Sen. Obama to win the race. He is leading at the moment but not by much. The election day (Nov. 4th) is only one and half month away which is coming up so soon.

今日、初めて一緒に演奏したドラマーのアレックス・ワイアット。若いのに、なかなか堅実なドラムを叩くやつでした。 He is Alex Wyatt whom I played with for the first time. He is young but yet very solid drummer.

　サリナちゃんとハラのバンドでタイムズ・スクエアにあるアルーバというバーでのライブです。やっぱりライブはお客さんの反応も違うし面白いですね。サリナちゃんも客をわかせていました。

The gig at Aruba in Times Square with Sarina and Hara. This gig was like a small live concert so the audience respond to our music much more than usual. I enjoyed a lot. Sarina was burning on her solo.

　久々のサリナちゃんとハラとのギグでございました。久しぶりに一緒に演奏できて嬉しくなってしまい、一平は理性のタガが外れた演奏をしてしまったかもしれません。うーむ、もしかしたら、はた迷惑なベーシストだったかな？この歳になっても未だに手榴弾の安全ピンがポロっと抜け落ちてしまうが如く、突然に大爆発してしまう己自身にはほとほとウンザリしています。いかんな〜。直さんとな〜。サリナちゃん、ハラ、ニック、ごめんなさいね。

It was a gig with Sarina and Hara. I think I was too excited and played some weird stuff. Maybe I was a bit of a bull in a china shop. Oh well, Sarina, Hara and Nick, I'm so sorry. I'm in mid 30s and still have a problem that I explode suddenly like the safety pin of a hand grenade drops off without known. So sorry. I'll try to keep the pin in.

　WaFooで２週間後にせまったコンサートのリハでございます。今回のコンサートは今までで一番バラエティーに富んだ楽曲が集まっています。WaFooはまさに多種多様な特技や経歴を持った人間の集団で、まとまりを出すのに本当に苦労するバンドです。ですが、さすがに５年もやっているとこれにまとまりが出て、さらにそこから発展してバラエティーが出てきました。今回のコンサートはその集大成です。まだまだ発展するバンドですが、その一通過点であるコンサートを観に来ていただければ幸いです。

The rehearsal with WaFoo. This rehearsal was for the concert coming up in two weeks. This concert has, I think, the richest variety of song selections in WaFoo's history. Each member of WaFoo has unique and so different speciality and career. That's pretty much the biggest problem of us and that is what making WaFoo distinct and interesting. After five years of countless rehearsals, we have learnt to play together, and deveroping from the togetherness, now we try to expand and diverse.

　この日は古い友人のジェフのバンドでマサチューセッツ州のシェルボーンで結婚式のギグです。この日も朝から雨が降っていましたが、ちょっと雨脚が弱まってきていて、コーディネーターの方がどうしても式を外でやりたいとギリギリまで頑張っていました。なんか、小雨ぐらいなら外でやってしまおう、という雰囲気をかもし出していました。しかし、私としては小雨でも楽器を雨風にさらすわけにはいきませんし、屋内でもちゃんと式が行えるスペースがあります。ここで私が取るべき行動は一つです。私は心の中で合掌し『神よ、この大地に雨を降らせたまえ』と天に向かって繰り返し詠唱しました。チッ、しまった。そういえば私は晴れ男だった。

　私が心の中で雨乞いの踊りをしていると、祈りが天に通じたのか、バケツをひっくり返したような大雨になり、式は屋内でやることになりました。私はスタッフが屋内に椅子を並べ替えてるのを見ながら、心の中でスキップしてました。

A wedding gig in Sherbone, Massachusetts. It was raining from the morning, but it became drizzling and the wedding coordinator was saying that she wanted to do the ceremony outside if she could. I really cannot put my wooden acoustic bass in rain. Besides, we had more than enough room inside of the inn to hold the ceremony. There was only one thing I could do. I was raindancing in my mind so hard. I guess somebody up there responded my call and the rain came back nice and strong. They finally decided to do it inside and I was yippee-ing and jumping around in my mind.

　ボストンから遠く１６０マイル（約２６０キロ）離れたメーン州のウォーターフォードという町で結婚式のギグがありました。苦労して遠路はるばるメーン州までやってきましたが、その甲斐あってか、これまた素晴らしく、そして平和的な景観でございました。

We had the wedding gig in Waterford, Maine which is 160 miles (260 kilos) away from Boston. It was worth the long drive. The scenery was just beautiful and peaceful.

まさに『大自然』という言葉があてはまる、どこまでも緑が広がる光景を前に、夏の終わりを楽しみました。もう秋はすぐそこです。 It truly was the view of "the Mother Nature" --- it was all green and alive as far as the eye could reach. We caught the end of summer. Autumn is near.

今回レンタカーで借りたヒュンダイのソナタです。とにかくパワーがあって乗りやすい車でした。 This is Hyundai's Sonata which I rented. It was really powerful and easy to drive.

　この日から三日間ニュー・イングランド地方でミニツアーです。本当はこの前日からボストンに入って仕事をする予定だったのですが、車の修理が上がって来なかったので、仕方が無く１日スラーバにずらしてもらい、私はレンタカーを借りてボストンまでやってきました。この日はボストン近郊のストウという町のカントリークラブで結婚式のギグでした。

I was on three-day mini tour in New England. I was going to come to Boston on the day before but my car was not fixed in time, so I asked Slava to push back a day and came to Boston with a rental car. It was a wedding gig in the country club in Stow, Massachusetts.

　久々にサリナちゃんとハラとでリハーサルです。えっらい長いこと会いませんでした。私のブログによると７月３０日から会ってませんでした。おお、ひと月以上も経っとる。この日もハラのドえらい難しい曲を弾かされました。

　リハの後にタイ料理のディナーをおごってもらっちゃいました。ほっほっほ。

Rehearsal with Sarina and Hara. We have not seen each other for a freaking long time. According to my blog, the last time we played a gig together was on July 30th. Wow, It's been more than a month! As before, Hara made me play his tough tunes at the rehearsal.

They bought me a nice Thai dinner after the rehearsal. Ha-ha.

　この日はニューヨークから西に車で３時間ほど離れたペンシルバニア州のハーシーに結婚式のギグで来ました。ハーシーは北アメリカではチョコレートの製造業としては最大手のハーシーズ（キスチョコで有名）の本拠地がある所です。

　その日はあいにくのどしゃぶりで、しかも野外のテントでの結婚式だったので、急遽いろんな事が変更されたようで大変でした。地面はいたる所がぬかるんでいたり、テントから滴り落ちる泥水が楽器のケースに落ちて来たりと、いい状況ではなかったです。ちょうどその会場に着くまで『今までやった結婚式ギグの中で最悪の結婚式はなんだったか』と、ボーカルのエリックと話していました。私はある小島で嵐の中、側面に雨よけのシートが少ししか付いてないテントで演奏した事があります。横殴りの風が四方八方から雨水とともに吹きこんで来て、ミュージシャンにとっても、そこにいた招待客にとっても濡れるわ寒いわで、最悪の状況でした。

A wedding gig in Hershey, Pennsylvania, the town where the headquarters of Hershey's Chocolate is in. It was unfortunately raining cats and dogs but the wedding was suppose to be held outside so I guess so many things were changed on the very last minute. They changed the place for the ceremony to the inside of the tent but some spots on the ground inside the tent was like mud. It was not the best condition. On the way to the venue, I and Eric the singer was talking about the worst wedding gig we did. I did a gig on a small island under a storm in the old tent outside. It was not sealed well enough so the rainwater was blowing through from everywhere. Not only wet but cold, and some unlucky guests were soaked and shivering.

　もしかしたら、このギグもそのように最悪なギグだったとお思いかも知れませんが、実はそうではありません。むしろ最高のギグでした。まず、その小島のギグに較べたら、こんな嵐なんぞ物の数ではありませんし、テントも全然しっかりしたテントでした。雨でコンディションは確かに悪かったのですが、この後に誰も予期していなかった事が起きて、状況は一変します。

　虹です。少し晴れ間が見えた時に東の空を見ると、くっきりときれいに半円を描いた巨大な虹と、さらにその外側に細い虹で二重の虹が見えたのです。私のような美術に何の造形も無い者でさえ、目に焼き付けられるほどの虹、なんと表現していいか分かりませんが、心の乾きがみるみる満たされていくような虹でした。おそらく、私が人生の中で見た虹の中で一番美しく雄大な虹でしょう。このギグは私にとって大変思い出深いギグになりました。どしゃぶりだろうと何だろうと、こんな綺麗な虹が見れた事に最高の幸せを感じることができました。

Maybe this gig was one of Ippei's bad gigs, you think. Well, compare to the small-island gig, this storm was nothing and we had a lot better tent than that. Actually this gig was one of my best gig. There was something nobody expected occurred right before we finished playing. The storm was calmed down a bit and a rainbow appeared. Not just a normal rainbow. It was the clear and the thickest half-circled rainbow I had ever seen and also a thinner rainbow on outside of it, so it was a double-rainbow. Even to me who had no idea on visual arts, the rainbow was burnt on my eyes; it was like the thirst in my heart was fulfilled. That was the most beautiful rainbow I have ever seen in my life. It was raining hard and was a long drive, nonetheless I felt so happy to see such an alluring beauty.

Okaru Lovelace Trio @ The Bass Line

　WaFooのバンドメンバーであるベースの中村一雄さんとキーボードの浅井岳史さんのギグを見にウエスト・チェスターまで来ました。オカルさんという日本人ジャズシンガーのバックで演奏していました。私は彼らがWaFoo以外でギグをやっている姿を見る機会が少ないので、とても新鮮でした。WaFooとはうってかわって、ジャズの伴奏を渋く弾いていて、オカルさんをうまく引き立てていました。

　実は私の車が壊れてしまい、このあと一雄さんの車をお借りしました。一雄さん、本当にありがとう！

I came to West Chester to see my band mates of WaFoo, Kazuo Nakamura (bass) and Takeshi Asai (keyboard). I don't see them playing outside of WaFoo too often so it was refreshing to see them playing as a back band of a jazz singer. They look so cool which I have never seen when they were playing with WaFoo. Ha-ha.

After this gig, Kazuo kindly rent me his car because my car's engine was cooked. Thank you Kazuo!!

Session @ Enrique's

　９月一発目のセッションでございます。エンリケ・ハネイネ、及部恭子さん、レックス・サミュとのカルテットでの気の合う仲間たちと楽しいセッションでした。やってる音楽は過激なのですが、私には何の気負いもなく演奏できる安らぎの時です。

The first session of the month with my good friends, Enrique Haneine, Kyoko Oyobe and Lex Samu. We play avant-gaurde jazz which is aggressive music, but to me, this session is for the time to mellow and play whatever comes up to my mind without worrying how people criticise my playing.
