Hara Garacci Trio Rehearsal in Park Slope, Brooklyn

　今日は５／３１のギグで一緒だったバイオリンのコーディーとリハーサルをしました。クラシックもジャズも弾きこなし、歌まで歌うミュージシャンです。これから一緒に仕事をたくさんする予感がします。

We had a rehearsal with the violinist we played with on May 31st, Cody Geil. She plays Classical as well as jazz and, what is more, she sings! I have a feeling we are going to work together a lot in the near future.

Naraokas came back to NYC

　ルームメイトのノリちゃんと優一くん、それに髪の毛をバッサリ切ったトモコさんが日本から帰ってきました。５／５に出たので、ちょうど１ヶ月間のツアーでしたね。お疲れさまでございました。空港に迎えに行った時は二人とも疲れきった様子でした。

My roommates, Nori, Yuichi and Tomoko who cut her hair off really short, came back from Japan. They left here on May 5th so it was one-exact-month-long tour. When I picked them up from the JFK airport, they looked so exhausted.

　空港から家へと向かう車の中で、優一くんを抱くトモコさんが、夜のブルックリンを見ながら「あーあ、帰って来ちゃった」と一言。なんで「あーあ、やっちゃった」みたいな言い方で言うのかな。よっぽど日本が楽しかったようですね。ノリちゃんと日本のテレビで見た新しい芸人さんの話になり、エド・はるみさんの事を言っていました。ノリちゃん、その人もうだいぶ前からいるよ…………。テレビ見ないで練習ばっかしてるから、話題に遅れるんだよ。というか、私が日本のテレビを見すぎですね。へいへい、私も練習しますよ。すりゃ、いいんでしょ。

On the way to home from the airport, Tomoko was seeing the night view of Brooklyn with holding Yuichi in her arms and said "Oh well, we came back..." Why are you saying like you made some kind of a mistake. It sounds like she really had a good time in Japan. Then Nori was talking about a new comedienne in Japan. Dude, she has been around quite a while. You are a fossil because you practice too much and don't watch TV. Well, I know I'm watching too much of Japanese comedy shows. They are awesome. Yeah, yeah, I'll practice more.

夜１２時すぎに家に到着。ここで彼らのツアーが終了しました。 We arrive at our house around 12am. Their tour had ended right there.

First session @ Enrique's new place

友人のエンリケがブロンクスに先週引っ越しまして、そこで記念すべき初セッションです。いいですね。アバンギャルドを弾いてる時が一番生きているという感じがします。いつものエンリケとレックスと共に２時間ほどアバンギャルドを弾き倒しました。楽しいセッションでございました。

My buddy Enrique just moved from Harlem to Bronx last week and we had a very first session in there. An avant-garde jazz session, of course. I feel alive when I play avant-garde. The usual members, Enrique, Lex and I, played whole two hours of spontaneous improvisation. Oh, that was so much fun!

新居がかなり気に入っているようです。まだ改築中でしたが、なかなかいい家でした。 Enrique loves his new place. The whole apartment was still in the process of remodeling but it was a great place!

Sarina Suno Quartet @ Thailand Cafe

　今日も楽しいタイランド・カフェでのギグです。８時に始まる予定なので７時半に着くようにベースとアンプを担いで電車に乗りました。７時を回り、地下鉄がマンハッタン橋を越える３分間ぐらいの間、イースト・リバーから望むマンハッタンの景観が車窓から飛び込みます。そこをベースを抱えながらボーっと窓の外を眺める中年の東洋人の携帯が鳴りました。ギターのハラからでした。

「今、どこだ？」
「マンハッタン・ブリッジだけど」
「あのさ、言うの忘れてたんだけど、今日は７時に始まるんだよね」

　どええええええ！この中年の東洋人はこともあろうに、大量輸送の公共交通機関の中で仕事帰りでお疲れのアメリカ人の方々に、日本の汚い罵りの言葉を大声で聴かせてしまうところでした。アメリカ人の方々、ごめんなさい。
　アホかい！なんで７時に始まるギグのことを７時１０分に言うんじゃあ！

It's the usual joyful enjoyable gig at Thailand Cafe today. It was starting at 8pm so I left home with my bass and an amp to give me enough time to arrive there by 7:30pm. The time was a little after 7. I was on a subway which was passing Manhattan Bridge, and was looking at the scenery of Manhattan over the East River from a train window. The cell phone of this middle-aged Asian man, who was hugging the bass and looking at the outside of the window vacantly, rang. It was from Hara the guitarist.

"Hey, where are you at?"
"I'm right on Manhattan Bridge."
"Bro, I forgot to tell you but the gig was starting at 7 o'clock."

WHAAAAAAAT!! This middle-aged Asian man almost screamed Japanese dirty swearwords in the public mass transit and almost made innocent American people in the train hear that. American people, I'm so sorry.
Brother, don't you tell me the gig was suppose to start at 7pm on 7:10pm!

　７時４０分ごろに到着し、だいたい７６秒ぐらいでセットアップを終え、３曲目の途中からギグに参加しました。なーんも悪いことはしてないのに大遅刻の体でしたよ。ああ、もうハラにトップロープに上ってダイビング・ヘッドバットをかましてしまうところでした。

I got there about 7:40, set up in about 76 seconds or so and jumped right in in the middle of their third tune. I didn't do anything wrong but looked like I was really late for the job. Aaaahhh, I almost climbed to the top turnbuckle and gave Hara a Diving headbutt.

　今日はお客様に日本からプロデューサーの木全信（きまた・まこと）さんとブルースカイ・エンターテインメントからビッグバンド・リーダーの奥田英人さんとパーカッショニストのどれみ♪さんが来て下さいました。ギグの終わりにどれみ♪さんから「関西の方ですか？」と聴かれました。そんなー、あほなー、なんでやねん。ワシ、東京から来ましてん。「なんか、サービス精神が関西のノリだったもので………」。ほっほっほ、それ最高の褒め言葉やで。そして奇遇にも、いつも見慣れた写真家の高井花代さんも同席していました。「姐さん、こんな所で何してんねん？」（もーえーっちゅうねん）。どうやら、お仕事中だったらしく、我々が演奏している写真をいっぱい撮って下さいました。皆さん、またおいで下さい。

We had some notable guests from japan in the audience today: Makoto Kimata (producer), Hideto Okuda (Big band leader from BlueSky Entertainment) and Doremi (percussionist). Also my old acquaintance, Hanayo Takai (photographer), came to catch our show. Thank you all for coming and please come again any time.

Penguins are asking "Having a happy summer day?"

　皆様、ご機嫌うるわしゅう。今年の３月にブログというものを始めて以来、ついにエントリー数が１００を超えました。ほーっほっほっほ。ブログなんてものが続けられるわけがないと思っていたのですが、あれよあれよという間に１００の大台にのってしまいました。私、小学生の頃に日記をつけなくてはいけない宿題がありまして、これが本っっっっ当に大っ嫌いでした。ほんの２、３行でいいのですが、これを書くのが大変な苦痛でして、それを書くだけで何時間も考えこんだこともあります。そして中学、高校にあがっても同様だったのですが、月一ぐらいで回って来る日直日誌なるものに芸人さんの小ネタみたいなのを書いてる奴がいました。これなら私にも書けると思い、やってみると、アラ不思議。それまでの私の人生をさんざん悩ませ続けていた日誌を書くという作業が、いとも簡単に進むではないですか。やっぱり作文も作曲と同様、自分のやりたいように創作するのって大事ですよね。私も国語の成績が悪かったとはいえ、本を読むのは好きだったし、こういう雑文を書く事は好きだったのです。まあ、下手の横好きではありましたが…………。
　
　時は流れ、ようやくおふざけ抜きの普通の文が毎日書けるようになりました。というか、私の頭に浮かぶふざけた事を普通の文に訳して書けるようになったというのが、本当のところです。それに加えて、私のボストン時代の元生徒がかなり読んでいるらしいので、自分の文に『教師』というリミッターをはめて、あまり下手なことを書かないようにもしています。このリミッターが功を奏したのか、お陰さまでアクセス数も延び、今では多い時には一日に５０人ぐらいの方にブログを見ていただいてます。これは私がホームページを持っていた時に比べても、はるかに多いアクセス数です。

　皆様、ありがとうございます。これからも私の駄文にお付き合い頂ければ幸いです。

Hello beautiful people. How are you all? I started writing this blog on this March and at last it broke the 100 entries mark!! Ha-ha. When I was in a elementary school, I alway had trouble keeping a diary. I remember that some evil teachers made the students keep a diary and that was the most painful homework for me. Even if I had to write a few sentences, I sometimes needed hours to finish it. The same problem was carried over to my junior high and senior high. That was still painful as hell but one day I saw one of my classmates writing almost a comedy skit on the class journal. Well, I can't write a few sentences of diary but I can write a few pages of skit. From that moment on, I didn't have any problem writing a diary or journal. I had to admit that the diaries were poorly written but I didn't hate it any more.

Now years had passed and I can finally keep a blog going without any problem. I want to thank everybody who came to my blog and read my "poor writings." (This is Asian way of being polite by putting him/herself down. Get used to it).

McDonald's hamburger with extra salt

　なぜ人の食べている物というのは美味しく見えるのでしょうか。２時間ほどヒマつぶしができる場所を探していた私は、窓際でハンバーガーを美味しそうに食べている子供につられて、マックに入りました。ジャンクフードは数年前にスーパーサイズ・ミーを観たあとは極力食べないようにはしていたのですが、先日、ポッドキャストでおぎやはぎさんが『マックのハンバーガーを塩多めで頼むとうまい』と言っていたので、私も同じ物を食べてみることにしました。普通のハンバーガーを頼んで自分で塩をかけたのですが、しょっぱくて、ちっともうまくありません。考えるにアメリカのマックのハンバーガーは日本のに比べると、元から塩分が多めなのかもしれません。

Why does the food somebody else is eating looks so tasty. I was looking for a place where I could kill time for a couple of hours. I went in a McDonald's because I was allured by a kid eating a hamburger right by window. I have been steering away from all kinds of junk food after I watched Super Size Me a few years ago, but a radio personality of a Japanese podcast said that the hamburgers of McDonald's with a little more salt was actually delicious. I took his words and tried it myself. Oh, that was disgusting. It was salty without putting extra salt on it to begin with, and I put some extra, it exceeded the limit of saltiness I could handle. I decided to continue steering away from it.

Sarina Suno Quartet @ The House

　今日２本目のギグです。ドラマーにニック・フォークを迎えて、カルテットのギグです。ベースとドラムのコンビネーションというのは音楽を演奏する上で本当に大事で、気持ちいいグルーブが出るまで時間がかかるものですし、いくらウマくてもウマが合わない人とは音楽をやっても合わないものです。ニックとはまだ知り合って日が浅いですが、昨日はグルーブが合ってきたと思います。彼はいいドラマーでいい奴です。

This is the second gig of the day. We had Nick Falk on drums and played at The House in Union Square. The combination between bass and drums is extremely important in playing music. It takes sometime to get into the groove and really lock in with each other, and also if you can not get along with each other in personality, you can not groove. Well it's not easy. I have known and played with Nick for a short period of time but I think we are getting more and more in sync. He is a good guy and a good drummer.

Book Off

　次のギグまで４時間半ありました。選択肢は２つです。片道１時間かかるブルックリンの自宅に帰って２時間半ほど練習するか、または４時間半マンハッタンで時間を潰すかでした。私は前者を選んだところで、生来ナマケモノのこの私が寸暇を惜しんで練習をするなどということはありえない話ですし、さらに２時間も移動時間として潰すのが非常に無駄なような気がしまして、マンハッタンに残ることにしました。というわけで、今日は時間を無駄遣いすることを決め込み、私にはマンハッタンで大好きな場所が２つあるのですが、その両方に行くことにしました。それはドラマーズ・ワールドとブックオフです。

I had four and a half hours to kill till the next gig. I had two choices; one, going home in Brooklyn which takes two hours to make a round trip and practice for two and a half hours, two, staying in Manhattan and going to my favorite places. It didn't even take a second for me to choose the latter. I have two favorite places in Manhattan that are Drummer's World and Book Off.

　ドラマーズ・ワールドの事はいずれ書くとして、ブックオフのニューヨーク店に行きました。さすがに良書が揃っています。その上に私には一番嬉しい漫画の品揃えも豊富です。４時間半の時間のうち２時間半はそこで過ぎて行きました。ブルックリンにも店を出してくれんかな。

I'll write about Drummer's World sometime soon. Book Off is Japan's largest used book chain store. If you haven't been there you definitely should go there. There are great collection of used book in Japanese and in English book as well. As the matter fact, the first floor is totally dedicated to used English books and CDs. I spent two and a half hours in there today.

Sarina Suno Quartet in Washington Square Park

　向暑の候、皆様はいかがお過ごしでしょうか。2008年も半分が過ぎ、後半戦が始まりましたね。この季節は私にとっては避けて通れぬ花粉症の季節でして、３月と６月はクラリチンが欠かせない生活になっております。

We are finally getting some summery hot sun. The year 2008 is half over and the second half of the game has begun. To me, around this time is the unavoidable hay-fever season and I have to keep taking Claritin-D everyday in March and June.

　月初めの週初めの今日もサリナちゃんとハラとデイヴィッドと一緒にワシントン・スクエア・パークに来てます。天気も良く、大勢の人たちが公園で昼食をとったり、仕事や授業の合間にしばしシエスタ（午睡）を楽しんでおりました。

The Monday today is not only the beginning of the week but also the beginning of the month. Four of us, Sarina, Hara, David & me, came to Washington Square Park to play good music. Lots of people were in the park having lunch, having a siesta in between their jobs or classes and enjoying the sunlight.

イタリアの天才軍師ガリバルディの銅像です。この銅像の前で演奏しようとするも、いつものパーク・レンジャーがやって来て、場所を移動させられてしまいました。 The bronze statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the genius Italian strategist. We were going to play in front of it but the park ranger who is always there told us to move and find different spot. Oh well.

　今日も楽しく演奏させていただきました。パーカッショニストのデイヴィッドと彼自慢の『ディッシュ』（詳しくはコチラ）も炸裂していました。今日はいつもの北東の角ではなく、ちょっと南側のスポットだったのですが、ベンチが多い所で、しかも芝生の前だったので、皆さん座ってじっくり聴いていたり、芝生で寝っ転がりながら聴いてくれていました。

It was another enjoyable performance. David's "Dish percussion" was great also. Today we didn't play at the usual north-east corner but a little south of it. There are a lot of benches at the spot and we were right in front of a lawn so people were listening to us sitting down on the benches or laying on the lawn without haste.

Moeyo Ken (Sword, Burn, 1964)

　司馬遼太郎の『燃えよ剣』読了。新撰組の土方歳三の話です。私は特に日本を出てから侍とか武士道とかが好きになり、こういう本を読むようになりました。しかも最近は車での移動が少なくなり、電車での移動が多くなったので、本を読める時間が何倍にもなりました。

I finished reading "Moeyo Ken" by Ryotaro Shiba. I just love those books about samurai and bushido and that sort of thing. I use trains more than car for the tranportation.

　大変に良い作品でした。田舎の喧嘩好きの不良少年が新撰組という幕末には例を見ないほどの厳格な組織を作り上げ、そして幕府軍に付いて戦い続けて、ついに函館戦争で戦死するまでの話です。 終盤では、もう敗戦はほぼ決定している状況でも、土方は自分の道を貫き通します。そして、翌日には死ぬ運命にある土方が恋人に一言『やったよ』と言います。これはたとえ３５年という短い人生であったとしても、人生を生ききったよ、という意味でした。

This is a great book. The story is about an actual person in Bakumatsu era, which is the final years of the long Samurai period, the time of chaos right before Japan was quickly modernized. A country-bred hoodlum named Toshizo Hijikata formed the old-style strict samurai group, which was going to be recorded in Japan's history, called Shinsen-gumi. This is the story of how and why he formed this organization, how fought and how he lived through the

On the day before the last day of his life, he says to his wife "I did it." What he meant was that he had lived his life in full.

　この本を電車の中で読み終えました。電車の中で泣きそうになったのは久しぶりですよ。日本の高校に通っていた時に京浜東北線の中で運悪く『フランダースの犬』を読み終わってしまった時以来ですね。

I finished reading this book while I was in a train. For the first time in a long time, I almost cried in a train. The same thing happened seventeen years ago when I finished reading A dog of Flanders in a train on the way to my high school.
