　今日２本目のギグでございます。私は初めて演奏する所なのですが、ニューヨークのシアター・ディストリクトにある『ヤム・ヤム・バンコック』というタイ料理のレストランです。店の人はみんな優しいし、賄いは美味しいし、最高です。サリナちゃんとハラも良い店を見つけてくれました。

This is today's second gig at Yum Yum Bangkok in the Theatre District in New York City. I have never played in here before. The people in the restaurant are great and the food was great. Sarina and Hara found another great venue to play!

　ところで余談ですが、サリナちゃんはこの４８時間で８本のギグがあるそうです。凄すぎる。私の自己記録は７２時間で７本だったのですが、軽〜く抜き去りましたね。４８時間で結婚式のギグが４本あった時があったのですが、これはさすがに死にました。押忍、サリナちゃんに追いつくように頑張ります。

By the way, Sarina has 8 gigs in next 48 hours. That's amazing. My personal record was 7 gigs in 72 hours but she broke my record like nothing. I had 4 wedding gigs in 48 hours once and I thought I was going to die. Oh well, I should better soup up and get more gigs myself.

International String Trio @ The Central Park Boathouse

　今日はセントラルパークのほぼ中央に位置するボートハウス・レストランで結婚式のギグです。実は私、セントラルパークには数えるほどしか行ったことがないのですが、もちろんこのレストランも初めてくる場所でした。いつも同じ事を言っているようで恐縮なのですが、これまた美しい所でした。私、生来の出不精なのですが、美しい景色を見るのは本当に好きで、特に結婚式のシーズンは各地の壮麗な風景や建造物と出会うことができます。ミュージシャンになって良かったと思う役得でもあります。

Today's gig was the wedding at the boathouse restaurant in the Central Park. I have to be honest with you that I have not come to the Central Park that many times, and as matter of course, that was very first time to be in the restaurant. Well, I hate to say the same thing all the time but it was a beautiful place. Although I am a born-homebody, I really love seeing the beautiful views and buildings. I can see a lot of those all over the US in the wedding seasons. This is the perks of being a traveling musician.

Kazuo's new car

　まあ、そんなわけで、このクソ忙しい時に大変な時間の無駄をしてしまったのですが、すぐに帰るのもしゃくなので、ちょっと一雄さんちでお茶をシバいてから帰ることにしました。

So, I threw away much time in such a busy day today and it was a bloody unpleasant experience. If I headed home immediately, the trip to Staten Island was going to become a total waste, so I had a nice chit-chat with Kazuo.

　初めに目に入ったものは駐車場に停めてあった見たことのない車でした。すぐに一雄さんの新しい車だと分かりましたよ。まあ、前のニッサンも悪い車ではなかったのですが、いかんせんもう古くなっていましたので、トラブルが続いていました。トヨタは燃費もいいし故障も少ないので、いい車だと思います。

The very first thing noticed was the car I have never seen parked at the driveway. I figured right away that the car was Kazuo's new car. His old Nissan was a good old work horse which had helped him going around long years, but it was quite obvious to look for a new one. I'm glad he has got a Toyota Scion. Toyota will run strong for long time and is a fuel-efficient.

　その後はゆーきちゃんの手作りプリンを頂き、世界経済の難しい話をたっぷりしてから家路に着きました。

Then we talked about complicated world economy, had Yuuki's homemade pudding and went home to finish this busy day.

Supernatural phenomenon

　皆様、熱帯夜が続く中、いかがお過ごしでしょうか。世の中、不思議なことというのが起こるものでございます。今日は私、怪奇現象を体験しました。事件はアメリカの、とある不気味な島で起こりました。

Hello everyone. How are you surviving the stinking hot weather? In this world, a lot of things which are beyond human being’s imagination occur from time to time. Today I have experienced the supernatural phenomenon. The incident happened on an island in America.

　その日は空に暗雲が垂れ込め、海は悲しみの色に濁り、風の音はこの世に未練を残して死んだ霊たちのうめき声に酷似していました。夏の午後、私はバンドのリハーサルのために汗だくになりながら重たいパーカッションやチェロを車に詰め込み、スタッテンという名の島へと一人旅立ちました。家を出る時に黒猫が横切り、私が履いていたゲタの花緒が切れました。その時から私は何とはなしに忍び寄る危険を察知していました。途中、通行料が１０ドルもする橋を渡り、もう私には後戻りすることは許されない領域まで足を踏み入れてしまいました。１時間ほどで私は目的地のあばらやに着きました。そのあばら屋には、なぜかカラスの大群が集まっていました。私は『カラスの集まる所には死人が出る』という日本の言い伝えを思い出していました。その薄気味悪いカラスの大群は一羽たりとも声も発することなく、ただ静かに私の動向を凝視していました。その獣たちの視線のもと、私は車から降り、その押しつぶされそうな重い空気から逃れるように、早歩きで玄関までたどり着きました。そして私がドアのノブに手をかけた瞬間のことでございます。カラスの大群が一斉に『グエエエエ！ギョエエエエ！』と羽をバタつかせながら、恐ろしい声で鳴き叫びはじめたのでございます。カラスたちは何かを察したのでしょう。私はその鳴き声が恐ろしくなり、『うわあああ！』と叫びながらドアを開けました。そのあばら屋のドアの奥には、痩せぎすの東洋人の男が、驚いたようにこちらを凝視していました。そして、長い沈黙のあと、男はおもむろに私に近づき、こう悪魔の言葉を吐いたのです。

『あれ、一平ちゃん。リハーサルは今日じゃないよ』

The day was not an ordinary day. The sky was gray, the ocean was in the color of sadness and the sound of the wind was exactly like the ghost’s moaning. I was suppose to have a band rehearsal so I packed my car with all the heavy percussion and head for the island called Staten. An hour later, I arrived at the dilapidated house where we were having a rehearsal. That was where out of ordinary had happened. A skinny Asian man in the house devilishly told me something way beyond my imagination.

"Oh Ippei, what're ya doing in here? The rehearsal is not today."

　ヒイイイイ、そんな馬鹿な。カレンダーにはちゃんと今日がリハーサルだと丸が付いています。絶対に今日に違いない。いや、それならば、なぜメンバーが一人も来ていないのだ？錯乱する頭の中で、発狂寸前の私はようやく一つの結論に達し、そして理解しました。そうだ、私は地球侵略をたくらむ宇宙人に誘拐されていたのだ、と。そして時空をねじ曲げられた世界に連れて行かれたのだ、と。私の頭の中で、全ての謎が氷解しました。

Rubbish! I circled on my calendar that today was the day of the rehearsal! What the heck is going on!? It doesn't compute. The only explanation which makes sense is that I was abducted by the aliens who were planing to invade the earth and I was brought to the different time and space.

　皆様も異次元の扉を知らないうちにくぐっている可能性があるので、ご注意下さい。あと、カレンダーに丸を付ける時は、それが正しい週かどうかをよく確認してから付けて下さい。そうしないと、多大な時間と労働力を無駄にするのみならず、無性に現実逃避をしたい衝動にかられることになります。

　からすの鳴き声は、いつの間にか『アホーアホー』と変わっていました。

Everyone, watch out. You might be in the twilight zone without known. Also, be careful on putting the circle on the right week on your calendar, otherwise you will not only lose much time and labor but also will be urged to escape from the realty.

　実に３週間ぶりにサリナちゃんとハラとのギグでございます。と、私自身、こう書くまで、まさか３週間も会ってないとは思いませんでしたね。この３週間の間で、それぞれの曲のアレンジを深く練ってきたのがうかがえます。サリナちゃんとハラの曲はビーボップの黎明期のように、けっこう速さでゴリゴリ押し倒す曲がかなりあったのですが、テンポを落として音やフレーズの一つ一つをより洗練して聴かせるスタイルに変えたようです。素晴らしい。テンポを落とすと、演奏が簡単になるとお思いかもしれませんが、一概にそうであるわけではありません。むしろ、テンポが遅いと細かい点まで浮き彫りになるので、腕のあるミュージシャンであればあるほど、遅いテンポでも聴かせる事ができると言えます。元々、技巧派の二人でしたが、さらに腕を上げたようです。まったく、末恐ろしいです。

That was the first gig in three weeks with Sarina and Hara. I did not realize until I wrote this entry that that much time had passed. They have polished the arrangements of the tunes in this three weeks. Sarina and Hara like to play fast like the musicians in the dawn of the Be-Bop era, but both of them changed the direction a bit and slowed the tempo down. Splendid. You might think the slower, the easier, but it's not always so. The slower the tempo is, the more details and small mistakes can be heard, which means only the skillful musicians can play the slow tunes beautifully. Both Sarina and Hara are very fine technical players from the first place and they are adding something more to it. It's scary that they just keep getting better and better.

Happy birthday, Yuuichi!

　今日は優一君の１歳の誕生日です。たくさんの人がお祝いに来てくれました。

It's Yuuichi's 1st birthday. He had so many guests at our place to celebrate his very first birthday.

お父さん手製のアンパンマン・ケーキです。 Father's homemade cake. It is the face of the famous Japanese cartoon character, Anpanman.

岡山県の風習らしいのですが、子供の１歳の誕生日に『一升』の米か餅を背負って歩かせると、『一生』食う物に苦労しないそうです。トモコさんが日本全国の風習だと力説していましたが、東京では聞いたことないよ……… This is an old custom of Okayama, where Tomoko is from. On the 1st birthday, if the baby can walk with issho (1.8 litres) of rice, the baby would be all set for the food for the entire of his issho (life). It's a homophone. So, what he has on his back is about four pounds of rice. He was crying so hard but actually could walk a bit.

　楽しい誕生日パーティーでございました。ノリちゃん、トモコさん、ありがとうございました。そして、お疲れ様でした。二人とも、エラい長いこと準備してましたからね。優一君がこのお父さんとお母さんの苦労と愛情を知るのはいつの日か……………

It was a fun party! Thank you Nori & Tomoko. Now you can have a rest because they were working for this party all day yesterday and all day today. Well, when will Yuuichi realize his parents' troubles which they go through for the love of their son?

Yuuichi's birthday Eve

　一昨日失敗してしまった炊き込み玄米ご飯を、今日も１日３食たべております。味を濃く作りすぎちゃったんですよね。まあ、白いご飯を足したり、卵をかけたり、おじやにしたりして誤摩化してます。しかも、山芋をおろして、韓国海苔をのせたら、アラ不思議、ちゃんと美味しく食べられるではないですか。味が濃いのも、ダシ的なものがまったくないのも、全てごまかせます。ハーハッハッハ、これであと５日はイケるぜ。

　ま、独身男の食生活の暴露話はこのへんにしときましょう。今日も１日中、ウチの中でノラリクラリと練習をしていたので、特筆することもないのですが、明日はルームメイトの息子さんの優一君の１歳の誕生日です。おお、お父さん、お母さんは今日からいろいろと料理の仕込みをしてますねぃ。明日は、お母さんはでかい鯛を塩焼きにして、お父さんは手作りのケーキを焼くそうです。は〜、すごい。ノリちゃんもトモコさんも優一君を愛情たっぷりに育ててますね。二人ともエラい！優一君も幸せだ。

I locked myself in my room and was just practicing percussion like yesterday or the day before or the day before the day before ........ Well I have nothing special to write for myself today, but for my roommates Nori & Tomoko, they had been working whole day for their son, Yuuichi's birthday party tomorrow. Tomoko said she was making salt-grilled sea bream and Nori was baking a homemade birthday cake for tomorrow. They both are doting upon Yuuichi. Yuuichi is one lucky baby!

つ、爪がかわいい！めっちゃ小さい！ Look at his nails. They are so small and so cute!

Blue flowers in the yard

　相も変わらずドラムの音しかしないベーシストの館からブログを更新しております。（訳の分からん人はコチラをお読み下さいませ）。私もノリちゃんも、いったいどうしてしまったんでしょうね。我ながら本当に不思議です。まあ、私がグルーブ感を出す事に思い悩んでいるように、ノリちゃんも思うところがあるのかもしれません。

　ウチの花壇にかわいい青い花が咲いていました。例によって名前は知らないのですが、綺麗な花です。私が何を思い悩もうが、季節は進んで行き、ふた月ほど前に咲いていた花とは別の花が咲いています。ふた月前にハナミズキが咲いていた頃から自分は進歩してるのかな〜と、ちょっと不安になる今日このごろでございます。

I'm writing this blog from the bassists' house which you only hear the sounds of drums. I wonder what the heck had happened to us both just practicing drums and percussions. Well, as I'm struggling with keeping the groove, Nori might be thinking to himself something.

The blue flowers is blooming on the small flowerbed in our house. As always, I don't know the name of the flower but they sure are pretty. Even if I struggle of something and tear my hear, the season steadily moves on, and the different kinds of flowers keep blooming one after another. I wonder if I got any better since the time the flowering dogwood was in bloom a couple of months ago.

Atashin’chi

『じょっおっねっつの、あっかいバ〜ラ〜』

　私が最近ハマってるアニメ『あたしンち』です。日本ではテレビ朝日系で放映されてるそうなんですが、これメチャクチャ面白いですね。どのエピソードも大笑いしてるんですが、私は２８話が大好きです。みかんが学校の授業中にどうしても眠くなってしまい、いろいろと眠気に対抗するためにまぶたにセロテープを貼ったりするのですが、どれも利かず、最後には白目を剥いてプルプル震えながら授業を受けてるというエピソードでした。これには私、のけぞって大爆笑してしまいました。あたしンち、最高！けらえいこは西原理恵子以来の天才です。

I have been watching a Japanese animation series called "Atashin'chi." It's an animated sitcom and I would say it is as good as "Married with children" and "Malcolm in the middle." It's just so funny and you'll die laughing. Unfortunately it has only been aired in Asian countries at the moment. Comedy Central or Cartoon Network should import it and put it on the air immediately!

Light & Shadow

　世の中、影があるからこそ光がある。挫折があるからこそ栄光がある。失敗があるからこそ、成功がある。

　また、料理を失敗してしまいました。１週間分ぐらい作ったのに、どーせーっちゅうねん。うわああああん！

This is the fundamental rule of this world where we dwell on. There are shadows, therefore there are lights. There are shames, therefore there are fames. There are failures, therefore there are successes.

Having said that, I bloody goofed up on cooking just now! I made a good enough portion for one week but what the hell should I do with it! AAAAAARGHH!!
