　すっかり大事な写真をアップするのを忘れていました。アマチュア写真家のビル・シャットさんが我々のパフォーマンスをカメラに収めてくれていました。５月１３日にサリナちゃんとハラのバンドでワシントン・スクエア・パークで演奏した時の模様です。たくさんの写真を送って頂いたのですが、ここに数点載せます。私は２枚目のハラの写真が一番好きです。いい表情をしてます。ビルさん、素晴らしい写真をありがとうございました。

I forgot to put these great photos shot by an amateur photographer Mr. Bill Shatto whom happened to be at Washington Square Park on May 13th and caught our performance. He kindly took a lot of photos of us and I'm putting up a part of what he sent. I like Hara's photo on the second one the most. it captured the best expression of Hara. Bill, thanks a million for these superb photos.

Sudden change of routes and schedules of subways

　ドえらい目に遭いました。ニューヨークの地下鉄は工事やら整備やらで、突然のダイヤ変更に路線変更など、本当に滅茶苦茶になる時が多々あります。昨日は見事にそれに捕まってしまいました。たいがいは夜中に工事をやっているので、私も気をつけるようにはしていたのですが、昨日はうかつでした。私はQラインという線を使っているのですが、それが朝の５時まで下りが不通になると言うのです。お陰で別ルートを通るハメになり、５回乗り継いで家に帰りました。普段は１時間もかからないのに、重たいベースをかついで３時間半もかかりましたよ。

What a bloody day! Bloody MTA changes the schedules and the routes quite often and quite suddenly for maintenance and stuff. I got caught of that last night after the gig. Usually it take an hour to get home from East Village but last night, it took me three and half hours. I got home about 3am. I had to take a completely different route, had to change trains five times and had to wait long time on each time I changed trains because the trains were on late-night schedule. Oh bloody thing.

Sarina Suno Quartet @ Thailand Cafe

　サリナちゃんとハラとのいつものタイランド・カフェでのギグです。サポートは私とドラムのニックです。今日は、よくもまあ、ここまで人が入るものかと思うぐらい、ずーっと満席でした。こんなに入るんだったら、アンプを持ってきた方が良かったかな。とにかく、今日は異常なほど満員で、夜の１１時を回ってギグが終わっても人が次から次へと、入るわ入るわ。おかげでキッチンが忙しすぎて、ミュージシャンのまかないが全然出てきませんでしたよ。
　今日もいいギグでございました。

The usual gig with Sarina and Hara at Thailand Cafe with the usual supporting members: Nick on drums and me. What was unusual was that the amount of people in there. The place was jam-packed tonight. Well, it's not unusual but the place was packed to capacity ALL THE TIME!! People kept coming in even after the gig was over at 11pm. Hmm, was there a festival or something in the East Village? The kitchen was too busy and the food for musicians didn't come out for quite a while.

Another great gig tonight.

Fifteen minutes of shave

　ひと月ぶりに髭を剃りました。私自身は髭を気に入ってたんですけど、女の子には100%嫌われてましてね。野郎どもからは似合っていると言われたんですが、そこは当然、女の子の意見をとって剃ることにしました。

I was growing a beard for a month and shaved it off today because all the girls I know hate it. Guys tend to like it though. Then my buddy Hara said,
"Hey which one do you want to sleep with?"

So I shaved.

An Aussie in New York

　昨日、私がベースソロをしている途中で一人の客が話しかけてきました。
「お前、ダンデノングから来たのか？」
　ニューヨークでは絶対に聞かない名前が出てきました。この名前で真っ先に思いつくのは私がオーストラリアのド田舎に住んでいた時の近くの町です。そこまで大きい町ではなく、電車の駅があったのは覚えているのですが、ギグをやった事もなければ、行ったこともありません。マウント・ダンデノングという山もヴィクトリア州のどこかにあったとは思います。どっちにしろ、ニューヨークで聞く名前ではありません。その客はこう続けました。
「俺もオーストラリアから来たんだ。お前、メルボルンから来たんだって？」
　うわあおっっ！間違いない、この人、ご近所さんだ！バリバリの地元じゃないですか。
　「俺はフランクストンに住んでて、高校はバクスターにあって、大学はボックス・ヒルにあった！」
　普段なら、こんなコアな地元の名前などメルボルンでも南東の地域に住んでいた人以外に出しませんが、ダンデノングを知っているのならば、この名前を知らないわけはありません。彼はどこに住んでいたのか訊きました。
　「いや、俺はシドニーから来たんだ。ダンデノングはただ訊いてみただけ」
　あれあれあれ？シドニーなんてバスで１２時間も離れてますよ。なんでシドニーもんが、そんなコアな地元の名前を知ってるのでしょう。その理由を訊きたかったのですが、我々のセットが終わる前に帰ってしまいました。
　うーむ、あれは何だったのだろう。なんで突然、ダンデノングの事を訊いたのだろう。この世はナゾだらけです。

Something weird happened last night. A guy asked me while I was playing my bass solo.
"Are you from Dandenong?"
That was the weirdest question I had ever been asked in New York. Well, Dandenong I know is a small town close to where I used to live in Melbourne. I know there was a local train stop in there, which means it's a small town but not that small, but I don't think I have neither ever gigged nor ever been there. As I wrote, the town is small. I think there is the mountain called Mt. Dandenong somewhere in Victoria as well. Anyway it's not the name you hear in the Big Apple. Then he continued.
"I'm from Australia. You are from Melbourne, eh?"
Oh my bloody God. This guy IS talking about Dandenong, Melbourne. He is my neighbour. He is from my neck of the woods.
"I used to live in Frankston, my high school was in Baxter and went to the college in Box Hill."
I would never quote these names of small rural towns unless the person who's talking with is from southeast area of Melbourne. If he knows Dandenong, he sure knows these local names. I asked where he was from.
"I'm from Sydney. I just wanted to ask if you are from Dandenong."
....what? Sydney is twelve hours away by bus. Why did a bloody Swans supporter ask me for the name of such a small town in Melbourne. He went home before we finish the set so I couldn't ask about it.

What the heck was it? Why Dandenong? Mmm, life is full of mysteries.

Sarina Suno Quartet @ The House

　今日もThe Houseでの楽しいギグでございました。いつも通りの満員御礼。ありがたや、ありがたや。私はここでやらせてもらうのは２週間ぶりで２回目なのですが、前回(2008/5/5)アロハを着てきた時に、ハラからここはオシャレな店だから、もっとちゃんとした格好をしてきてくれと言われました。分かりました。あんな昭和の匂いのするファッションではなく、もっとナウい格好をしてくればいいのですね。というわけで、皆様、写真をご覧ください。これが私の持つ最高のシャツ、名付けて『オシャレ１号』でございます。このシャツは滅多に着ませんぜ。

Another fun gig at The House in East Village and we had full-house tonight. This is my second time here and I was asked by Hara to attire nicely, meaning something better than Alohas which I wear all the time, because it's a nice place. So, ladies and gents, please take a good look at the picture, I was wearing my very best shirts.

ニックの新しいドラムセット。ハイハットもスタンドもトランクに収納できて、トランクをスネア・ドラム代わりにします。 Nick's new drumset. He takes hi-hat and stands from the suitcase and the suitcase itself becomes the snare drum.

Riverside Opera Company: Puccini Festival 2008

　自分が働いている会社の名前が分からなくなるのは、よくあることでございます。って、そんなの私だけですね。過去２日間のブログでリッチモンド・カウンティー・オーケストラでのリハーサルと書いたのですが、実はリバーサイド・オペラ・カンパニーの仕事でした。基本的にメンバーは同じなので間違えていました。失礼しました。

There is a small correction. I wrote "Richmond County Orchestra's rehearsal" but actually I was working for Riverside Opera Company. Both of them basically shares the same members so I didn't know. I'm new for this orchestra, you know. Sorry!

　Trinity Lutheran Church という私は初めての場所でのコンサートだったのですが、とにかく音響がいい場所で、私のチェロから聴いたことがない音が出てました。大変、気持ちよく演奏ができました。

The concert was held at Trinity Lutheran Church where I had never played before and the church had great acoustics. My cello was singing by the voice that I had never heard. I really enjoyed playing in there.

　今回は『プッチーニ・フェスティバル・2008』と題され、イタリアの作曲家プッチーニの生誕150年を祝うコンサートでした。プッチーニを中心に数々のオペラの曲を演奏しました。

This concert was entitled as "Puccini Festival 2008" to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Italian composer Puccini's birth. We performed the excerpts from several operas of Puccini and some other composers.

　ところで全く関係ない話なんですが、私がコンサートの前にタキシードで正装した時の事です。蝶ネクタイを付けたのですが、その時に私の首が顕著に細くなっているのに気がつきました。柔術から遠ざかって早４年、熊のような大男どもを相手に格闘をしていて自然に太くなってしまった首が、今はミュージシャンのそれになってます。男としての一抹の哀しさを覚えました。

By the way, I wore tuxedo before the concert and noticed that the size of my neck had got thinned a lot. I stopped practicing jiu-jitsu four years ago. My neck got naturally thickened while I was fighting against big guys like bear, but now it is a thin musician's neck. As a bloke, I felt sad a bit.

　このエントリーは日本にツアーに行ってて、連絡がつかないウチのルームメイトへの手紙です。トモコさん、こっちは何の問題もなくやってます。ロビーも元気です。ご飯もいっぱい食べるし、フンの位置も安定してます（ストレスレベルのバロメーター）。という訳で、何も心配しなくて大丈夫です。たぶん今、日本で殺人的なスケジュールをこなしているのでしょうが、元気で帰ってきて下さい。優一君とノリちゃんも元気でしょうか。頑張ってね。
This entry is the message to my roommates who are touring in Japan and are most probably pressed by tight performance schedule. Everything is fine in here with me and Robby. I hope you guys are well in Japan as well.

Richmond County Orchestra's rehearsal @ Trinity Lutheran Church (Day 2)

　リハーサル２日目です。譜面が昨日貰えたので今日は昨日に比べたら、まだ弾けた方だと思います。明日はいよいよ本番です。プレッシャーがかかります。
The second rehearsal and this is the last one. I got the charts yesterday and had some time to work on it, so I think I played much better than last night. Pressure is on.

　私の友人で、最近ストリート・ミュージシャンに傾倒しているハラから電話があり、明日また公園でやらないか、と言われました。オペラっていつもプレッシャーがかかるから、私もできることならストリートに行きたいです。
My friend Hara who has become quite a street-musician lately gave me a buzz and asked if I was up to do the street at the Washington Square Park tomorrow. Well, I always have so much pressure on my shoulders when I play operas so I'd rather do the street...... if I can choose!

Late dinner @ Adobe Blues

リハの後に３人仲良く近場のパブに遅い夕食を食べに行きました。ジャズのギター・トリオがライブで演奏していて、意外と顔の広い一雄さんが通りかかったミュージシャン達から声をかけられていました。この日は一雄さんがオゴってくれました。わーい。昨日いろいろ書いたけど、あれはなかった事にして下さい。 Kazuo, Yuuki and I went to a pub nearby to have some late dinner after the rehearsal. There was a live music going on and jazz guitar trio was playing at the place. Kazuo knows a lot of musicians in Staten Island and was talking to a few people who just walked by. By the way, the dinner was Kazuo's treat. Wow. Hey brother, I wrote a lot of stuff yesterday but please forget about it.
