International String Trio @ The Barn at Gibbet Hill

　またまた見事な景観でございます。マサチューセッツ州のグロトンにあるジベット・ヒルという所に来ております。インターナショナル・ストリング・トリオでいつものように結婚式の仕事でございます。ここに来るのは初めてなのですが、ホームページの年表を見ると、2004年にオープンしたばかりのけっこう新しい式場だそうです。そして、そこに書いてあった年表をさかのぼって読んでいくと、年表の初めの方、つまりこの場所の成り立ちが実に興味深い。ちょっとネットで他のページも調べたので、簡単な要約を載せます。

1645年
　ジベット・ヒル（訳すと『さらし絞首台の丘』。日本語の方が100万倍コワイ）と名付けられたが、実際に処刑場があったわけではなく、イギリスの地名の流用とのこと。その後は農園がここにあった模様。

1906年
　バンクロフト将軍が退任後に移り住むために、この丘を購入。丘の上にお城のような豪邸を建てようとするも、途中でお金が底をついて中止。（奥さんが建設途中で亡くなったからだという説も）。以後、『バンクロフト城』と呼ばれる。

1918年
　ハロルド・エアーズ氏が私立のサナトリウムを建て、1920年代は数々の結核患者が収容される。

1930年代
　グロトン狩猟クラブに持ち主が移り、狐狩りのベースになるも、1932年に花火が原因で出火。上記の写真にあるように塔の部分だけが残る。

　とまあ、その後も色々とあるのですが、私の興味を引いたのは、このサナトリウムです。日本の教科書や小説などで、たびたびサナトリウムの話が出てきますが、実際にそれがあった所に来るのは初めてです。なんか、そういう歴史を知り、すでに彼岸が見えた人々が見ていたこの美しい風景を、私も同じ場所から見ていたということがわかると、ひときわ感慨深い思いがします。彼らや彼女らはこの緑の中に薄暗い色も見ていたのでしょうか。それとも、やれ綺麗だ素晴らしいだ美しいだのと、この緑を勝手に極彩色に変えてしまっているのは、むしろ私の方なのでしょうか。まあ、変に悟ったような事は言わずに、色んな視点から物事を見れる目を養いながら、楽しめる日々を楽しめるうちに楽しむことにします。

　堀辰雄の『風立ちぬ』がまた読みたくなりました。

An incredible view again. I came to Gibbet Hill in Groton, Massachusetts. It was an usual wedding gig with International String Trio. That was very first time for me to come to the place and, according to the "history" on their home page, this venue was opened in 2004, so it had been there for only five years. By the way, I read the "history" page back on the time line and found that how this place had begun was rather interesting.

The most interesting thing to me was that this place used to be a sanitarium for tuberculosis. I read about sanitariums on textbooks and novels but I have never come to the place where a sanitarium actually once existed. Knowing the history behind it and knowing those who were knocking on the heaven's door were seeing what I saw at the hill, I now have somewhat different feeling on that beautiful landscape. Maybe he/she was seeing not only the color of green but also some dusky colors. Or maybe I am the fool on the hill and selfishly changing the color of green to some gaudy colors with saying, oh beautiful, oh wonderful and so on.

Well, I shouldn't even pretend as if I was enlightened. I will enjoy what I enjoy while in the days I can enjoy.
