AAAAARRRGGHHHH!! This time, my shamisen is broken!!
I think the dryness of my room caused it. The back skin of my shamisen is torn. Ooooohhhhh, well. The repair of my bass was just done a few days ago and now it is shamisen. Are my instruments taking turn to be broken or something? Year 2009 doesn't look too good so far.
Oh, these dark pages of my diary will be long remembered.

Koreatown, Manhattan
The day my bass is coming back. I went to the Koreatown on the 32nd Street to eat something good to celebrate of the complete recovery of my bass. I was going to have some tang or jjigae but instead, I bought some broiled eel and lots of kimuchi (three pounds to be exact) to have them at home with a large helping of white rice. Mmm.
The bass was perfectly done. I felt so relieved. Well there is a new scar right where the neck and the body is attached but I can live with that. I was afraid of skipping a gig but, to end up with, I did not miss any. That was real relief.

The 42nd Street
I brought my bass to the repairer in Manhattan. He told me that the bass was in pretty bad shape. The neck and the body was almost detached. He grubbed the neck and started shaking my bass, then the body was wobbling so much. It was clearly not attached properly. Jeez, the bass would have snapped in halves.
I went through the 42nd Street then head for my apartment. I won't have my bass for a week. Oh well.

Sarina Suno Quartet @ Thailand Cafe
The gig at the Thailand Cafe in the East Village with Sarina & Hara. We had Marko on drums and, as usual, his beat was smoking. Sarina and Hara's friend, Aruan, sat in with us and he added distinctive color on the band. That was one fun gig. My bass was not in best shape but I played it with my best ability.

Nightmare
AAAAARRRGGGHHHH!!! M-M-M-MY BASS'S GOT A CRACK!!
I found it right before Sarina & Hara's gig. Both of them considerately said that I did not have to play on that night, but a pro can not ditch a gig in any situation. Show must go on. I felt sorry to my bass but I played the bass all through the night.
Oh well, why is this happening to me....

Session @ Enrique's
(The internet connection was out for whole day again. I won't give up just yet......)
Well, well, I'll jot down what has been happening in my life in the last three months. Actually, this is the day one of the major events of my musician life had happened.
I was walking down to my buddy, Enrique Haneine's house to do a fun session with Kyoko Oyobe and the violinist whom I had never met, Erika Kapin. All of a sudden, I heard very small cracking noise from my bass. I checked out everywhere on my bass at Enrique's place but I could not find anything unusual.
I noticed something unusual while we were doing a session though. The tone and the pitch were different but it was not so weird because these things can change depends on the weather. What was weird was the tension of the strings. It does not change that much.
At this point, I had no idea what kind of horrible thing had been happening on my bass which I was going to find out a few hours later....

Sorry for not updating the blog
I am so sorry |
Hello Ladies & Gents,
Sorry that I have not been renewing the blog for such a long time. I moved to the new apartment on the beginning of this year and the first thing I noticed was the bad internet connection of this apartment building. The router was screwed or not powerful enough to provide 18 rooms, so the router sometimes connects normally and sometimes goes off for half a day. We all in this building had been twisted by this capricious router's little finger --- the router must be Gemini. Then, in the middle of January, the internet connection became really bad and the connection was sometimes cut off for a few days. That is how bad it is now. That is why I could neither renew my blog nor call Japan and Australia because the internet phone was also dead. I really do apologize to everybody whom I reluctantly made worried.
Well, at least I should have put the notice saying that I would not be able to renew my blog for such and such reasons. My relatives in Japan became seriously worried about me so I'll restart the blog again. The router is still screwed but I'll do my best.
I have so many photos I want to put on my blog.
I have only lived in this new apartment for three months and am thinking moving out again. Why? Because I cannot write my blog.

Muji
I went to the Japanese apparel and household store called Muji today. The company is emphasizing on minimalism, recycling and low price. There is something I had to buy immediately; that was a bed cover. I am using the bed cover which was there already when I moved. Unfortunately the one who lived before me was a young Japanese girl and it looks like the girl's taste in color was a little different from this 35-years-old middle aged Japanese man. I have lived as a straight arrow for 35 years and I think I deserve the bed cover which is not in the color of bright shocking red. I visited the shop which was located in the New York Times Building close to Times Square.
The first impression.
BLOODY EXPENSIVE!!
It was so bloody steep. The bed cover was 120 bucks which was 3-4 times more than usual. I guess they have totally different selling concept from what they have in Japan. The shop is on one of the busiest area in the Big Apple so I understand they had to tag the goods at the higher prices, but if I knew it I would not have come to the shop. I saw the exact same thing happened when Daimaru the Japanese department store opened in Melbourne. Of course, nobody went there to shop.
Well, but I still think what they sell have pretty good quality and has unique and simple designs. I also like their no-dyeing concept. I think if they do everything right, the shop will be the next Ikea.

WaFoo @ Holy Child Church
After the last mass of the day, we immediately started setting up again. The church was packed because the most of the people from the mass kindly stayed there for our concert. I think we had the most number of audiences for our concerts so far. We had to start the show only after 30 minutes. Our small regret was that we could not do the through sound check but we are pros. We dealt with it by adjusting the volume and tone while we are playing.
Although we had new tunes and were worried about the lack of rehearsals, the audience enjoyed the concert and bought many CDs. The concert was success. I was so relieved when I saw the audience smiling because I had those worries before the show. The music director of church told us to come again. We promise we will came back, and when we come back, we will be seriously souped up.
People who came to the concert, thank you very very much.

Little Rest
We finished setting up and checking the equipments. Till the concert, we came to a Korean/Japanese restaurant nearby to finally have a rest. This little rest was golden for me because I had been working for literary two days straight, and Kazuo must have been tired too because he brought in the band's equipments by himself and did another gig with Yuuki in the morning before he came to the church.
The Bi Bim Bop I ordered was unexpectedly huge! I was so happy. |
Yutaka ordered Oyakodon (Chicken Rice Bowl) but they brought Chicken Katsudon (Chicken-cutlet Rice Bowl). Well, maybe this rice bowl is called Oyakodon in Korea. Hey Yutaka, it's your responsibility to finish it all. |

Setting Up for the Concert
I got on the coach at 2:30am in Boston and arrived to the Chinatown in New York around 6am. I took the subway in the freezing cold and got home about 7. Then I left for WaFoo's concert at 11. Oh, that was a tough start of the day.
Snowing...... Not again..... Freezing too... |
This big church is Holy Child Church on Staten Island where we play at for the first time. They held four masses already on the day before we played and the church was packed each time. I have hardly ever seen the church with this many people. Not mention that that was only Saturday. I have heard that the church is holding six masses on Sunday. That is something I have never heard in my life.
It was a super busy church as you can imagine so we were given so limited time to set up. On the time between 2nd and 3rd mass, we set everything up as quickly as possible, made sure everything works, then put everything aside not to disturb the mass. We could not really do the sound check, and while we were stashing away the equipments, the 3rd mass had already started.

Rehearsal and Photoshooting with International String Trio
After the restaurant gig, we had a late rehearsal for the concert in the beginning of February. This rehearsal was much more important than the gig for me. We took a lot of pics for our home page. I will put the part of it in here.

International String Trio @ No.9 Park
Back to the Beantown. I used Bolt Bus, the new coach which has internet connection inside the buses, to come to Boston again. I took the first bus in the morning and that was a mistake. I got caught in the traffic jam in everywhere and it took me six and a half hours to get to Boston. I will take the one goes a few hours later next time.
Today's gig was the background for the party at the high-class restaurant right in front of Boston Common with Slava's Trio. I often think that this kind of high class restaurant is somewhere I can never come if I was not a musician. The restaurant was like a scene from a TV drama or some thing.
