Rehearsal with Cody Geil Quintet

　コーディーのバンドでリハーサルでございます。キーボードに最近日本からやってきたばかりの海野雅威（うんの・ただたか）さんを迎えて５人でリハをしました。週末の結婚式のギグで普段はやらないダンス・ミュージックもやることになり、そのためのリハでした。私、実はダンス・ミュージックにはそこらのミュージシャンよりも多少、自信があったのでございますよ。なぜかと言うと、私がまだボストンに住んでいた頃、パーティーバンドをサラリーマンのように５年も勤め上げ、ダンス・ミュージックは毎週弾いていたからです。演奏した曲数など数知れず、アメリカ東海岸のあまたの地でギグをこなしてまいりました。まあ、合計で３００本はやったと思います。そのシーンから去ってたったの２年。自信満々でリハを始めると………

「おおお、思い出せん」

　元々、記憶力はそんなにいい方ではありませんでしたが、あれだけやりこんだ曲が全然頭に出てきません。しかも指もおっつかない。たったの２年で人間というものはこんなに変わるものでしょうか。時間って残酷。

　嗚呼、商業的なパーティーバンドを辞めて、もっと芸術的な道を歩むことを決めた私。営業用に弾く技術や知識がすでに過去のものになったことが、嬉しくもあり、哀しくもあり…………

Rehearsal with Cody's band with the new keyboardist Tadataka Unno who recently moved to NYC from Japan. For the next gig, we are asked to play some dance music like disco and R&B. Well, I hate to brag but I used to be in a party band in Boston for five years and I am kind of an expert of dance music. I had played literally in everywhere on the East Coast almost every weekend and have done more than 300 parties and club gigs in total. I left the business-music scene to be a real artist and stopped playing this kind of music, but it is only two years ago. I should still remember the most of it, that I thought. I came to the rehearsal and started playing my bass with full confidence, but....

"I-I-I-I can't remember...."

Okay, I admit that I do not have a good memory but I thought... I mean, I wished I would remember a little bit more. On top of that, my fingers did not move up to the speed. How can a man really decay this much in two short years? Time is cruel.

I quited the party band to pursue the artistry of music. Today I noticed that the knowledge and the technique to play those business music had become the things of the past for me. Well, it is a joy, but it is sad....

Cody Geil Quartet @ New Museum

　今日はコーディーのバンドでニュー・ミュージアムというソーホーにある現代美術の美術館に来ました。またブライダル業界の顔見せギグです。

We came to New Museum of Contemporary Arts in Soho. It was a showcase gig for the wedding industry.

　ソーホーは周りに高いビルがそんなにないので、テラスからエンパイア・ステイト・ビル付近の遠景を見渡せました。良い所でございました。秋口の暖かい日差しを受けながら、バンドのみんなが来るまで、ここで司馬遼太郎を読んでいました。

There are not too many tall buildings in Soho, so I could see all the way to the Empire State Building. A good view. I was reading Ryotaro Shiba under warm autumn sun until the band members arrive.

さすが美術館だけあって、夜景の雰囲気も最高。 The night view was excellent; it was worthy of the view from the respected art museum.

International String Trio in Cambridge, MA

　この日はボストンの隣町のケンブリッジにあるホテルでユダヤ教式の結婚式です。いやー、豪勢な結婚式でございました。これがボストンでは今シーズン最後の結婚式になります。景色も良ければ、賄いも美味しかったです。ほっほっほ。

We had a Jewish wedding gig at a hotel in Cambridge which is right next to Boston. That was a real luxurious wedding. This gig is the last wedding gig in Boston. The view was good and the food was good. Ha-ha.
　ただ、実はセットアップする場所がなくて、結構な人通りがあるドアの真ん前にセットアップするしかありませんでした。案の定、私はドアを通ろうとする人たちがドアを開けるたびに背中や後頭部をぶつけられ、私のストレスメーターの針はぐんぐんとレッドゾーンに近づいていきます。もちろん、ドアを開けた人に罪はありません。そんなに人が絶えず出入りしているドアの前で、ミュージシャンが演奏しているなどとは誰も思わないでしょう。どちらかと言うと、そんな所に立っている私の方が悪いのです。なんとかギグを終えたものの、とうに針はメーターを振り切っておりました。私はぶつけようのない怒りを抱えたまま、他のメンバーたちに当たり散らして迷惑をかけないように、そこらをウロウロとしていました。

その時、素晴らしいグルーブが隣の会場から聞こえてきました。次のバンドが演奏をし始めましたのです。ラッキーなことに、そのバンドはLegit（レジット）というボストンでは有名なパーティーバンドで、私がまだボストンのパーティーバンドに入っていた頃に何度か顔を合わせたことがあります。リズムもソロもパワフルで楽曲の一曲一曲の完成度も高く、立て続けに３曲も聴いてしまいました。聴き終わった時に、私の心は晴れ晴れとしていたとは言えませんが、重くもありませんでした。頭からは血が下がっていました。

　音楽の力って凄いですね。嫌なことも、いい演奏を聴いている時は忘れさせてくれます。そんな事を再確認したギグでありました。

At the same time, this gig was a bit of a challenge for me in self-controlling. We did not have much room to set up and the management told us to set up right in front of the door which lots of people go in and out all the time. Bad things were bound to happen but I had no choice. Sure enough, my back and the back of my head are hit by the big heavy door each time people open it. My stress meter was clicking up a bit by bit and dangerously closing to the red zone. I am not blaming on anybody. It was not the fault of the people who opened the door. I should not be standing in front of the door from the first place. The gig ended an hour later. The pointer of the meter had already wavered the maximum mark long time ago. Immediately after the gig, I started wondering around just because I did not want to take it out on the band members.

Then I heard a great groove. The band in the next hall started playing. I just lucked out to catch the performance of one of the most renowned party-bands in Boston, Legit. I had come across with them several times when I was still doing a party-band. Their rhythm and solos are so powerful and each tune was really refined. I listened to three tunes straight and I enjoyed every second of the performance of well-experienced professionals.

After I heard it, I could not say I forgot all the troubles I had an hour ago, but my heart was not heavy either. The forest fire in my heart was brought down to a fire of a match. The power of music is splendid. You can forget any of the bad experiences you had when you hear good music. I reconfirmed it today.

　スラーバのギグでボストンに来ました。ボストンにはバスで来たのですが、ななめ後ろに座っていたオッチャンが明らかに手作りの光かがやく愛妻弁当を食べていました。そしてそれを横目で見ながら、マックのバリューセットを食べる私………。私はなぜか、もんの凄い敗北感を味わいました。
　ま、それはさておき、ギグでございます。児童福祉のためのパーティーだったので、オープンオークション（品物が陳列されていて、客が勝手に値段を書いていき一番高値をつけた人が落札）などが出ていました。美味しい賄いも出て、楽しいギグでございました。

I came to Boston for the Slava's gigs in this weekend. I used a bus to get to Boston and a businessman-type of guy was sitting diagonally opposite me eating a box lunch made with loving care of his wife. I was watching him while I was eating a value meal of McDonald's. For some reason, I felt like I suffered an indescribable defeat.

Anyway let's talk about the gig. It was a party for the benefit of children so open-auctions and that kind of things were going on. Well, they fed us really good and it was a fun gig.

　サリナちゃんとハラとでタイランド・カフェでのギグです。もうすっかり、秋ですね。お客さんも衣替えして、前の週とは服装がガラッと変わっていました。

Sarina and Hara's gig at Thailand Cafe. It is Fall already. Everyone in the house was warmly attired, which was completely different from the week before.

Cody Geil Quartet in Brooklyn, NY

　昨日と同じコーディーのカルテットで、ブルックリンにあるペントハウスでのプライベート・パーティーのギグでございます。地上１３階からイーストリバーを望むこの高層アパートでゆったりとした静かな曲を演奏しました。

The private party gig in Brooklyn, New York with the same Cody's quartet as the day before. We played nice quite music on the top of a 13-story building with the great view of the East River.

どわああああ、突然親父が地上１３階の窓の外に出現しました。いきなりこのハイソな雰囲気に似つかぬオッチャンの登場に、一同、息を飲んでしまいました。窓清掃の人でした。地上１３階で命綱１本で壁にはりついて窓清掃。私には絶対にできない職業ですね。私はまだ命が惜しいです。 WHAAAAAAAAT!!! All of a sudden, a guy came out of nowhere to the outside of the window. All of us including the people partying gasped. It's a window cleaner. Cleaning windows on the height of 13th floor with just one lifeline..... This is one of the occupations I can never do. Life is still dear to me.

Cody Geil Quartet @ Havard Club of New York City

　由緒正しいニューヨークのハーバード・クラブでブライダル業界の顔見せギグです。こういうのにたくさん顔を出しておけば、来年あたりから仕事が入って来るという寸法です。ほっほっほ。広い会場が人であふれかえっておりました。ボストンのハーバード・クラブでなら何度も演奏した事があるのですが、ニューヨークのは初めてです。というか、ニューヨークにもあったんですね。さすがは天下のハーバード大学です。

The showcase gig of the wedding industry at old-established Harvard Club with Cody Geil quartet. The more we make appearances and make ourselves known at this kind of showcases, the more likely we are to be hired. Ha-ha. The huge hall was always packed with people. I have played at the Harvard Club in Boston a lot but not even once at the one in New York. Well, I did not even know that there was one in New York. I guess it's in everywhere. That's just what one would expect of the great Harvard University.

　バイオリニストでシンガーのコーディーのバンドでリハーサルです。また仕事が増える予感。ほっほっほ。

I just had a rehearsal with violinist/vocalist Cody Geil. I have a feeling we will get a lots of gigs together. Ha-ha.

Sarina Suno Quartet @ Thailand Cafe

　サリナちゃんとハラとで、いつものタイ・レストランのギグです。１枚目の写真に後ろ姿しか写ってませんが、アレックス・ワイアットがドラムでした。この日はいつもより早い時間にギグを始めたので終わりも早かったです。いつもは閉店間際まで演奏しているのですが、今日は演奏が終わってからわりと時間があったので３人でずっと楽しく談笑しておりました。

The Thai restaurant gig with Sarina and Hara. Alex Wyatt was on the drums but he had to split right after the gig. We began the gig early today so we ended early. Normally we play till the closing time of the restaurant but we had so much time after the gig so three of us hung a bit and enjoyed chit-chatting.

早いですねぇ。もう今年もハロウィーンの季節がやってきました。 It is already Halloween season. Feel like it comes so soon....

Japanese Beef Bowl

　最近、いろいろな事が身に降り掛かったせいか、ボーっとしてたり、単調な楽器の基礎練習などをしていると頭が勝手にその事を思い出してムカムカしてきます。なので、牛丼を作ることにしました。牛丼を作ってる時は不思議とその事を忘れられるものですね。味ももちろん良かったですよ。

Well, I had quite an eventful month and those bad memories repeat itself in my brain when I am not doing anything or practicing basic monotonous stuff on my instruments. So, I decided to cook something nice to put the thoughts out for a while. I made a Gyu-don, Japanese Beef Bowl. Gyu-don is really easy to make and tastes really good. As I planned, I was forgetting about those things when I was cooking it and eating it. I have to add it was really delicious.
