International String Trio @ Nashoba Valley Winery

　インターナショナル・ストリング・トリオで今回もまた素晴らしい所でギグをやらせて頂きました。ボストンから１時間ほど離れたナショバ・バレー・ワイナリーでの結婚式のギグだったのですが、もー、景色が素晴らしい！ワイナリー（ワインの醸造所）だけあって、いろんな果物が栽培されていて、すぐそこの木にもリンゴがなってました。私ね、やっぱりニューヨークや東京なんて所は肌に全然合わないのでございますよ。自然の中にいるのが私には一番でございます。ああ、オーストラリアに帰りたい。

And again, I came to a wonderful place with International String Trio. We did a wedding gig at Nashoba Valley Winery in Bolton, Massachusetts, which is about one hour west of Boston. The picture perfect, it is. The whole place is a winery so there are orchard of apples, peaches, plums etc. The apple trees were right beside where we were playing. Oh yes, though I have grown up in Tokyo and now live in New York, I really am not an urban-type of a guy in nature. I really want to be in the woods under the sun and have lots of good fresh air. My soul flies right back to Australia....

Ichigo Cream

　これ、私がボストンで一番好きなケーキ屋さん『ジャポネーゼ』の新作の苺クリームです。カスタードが甘過ぎやしないかと心配だったのですが、そんな事は全然なく、程よい甘さで本当に美味しかったです。私のお気に入りは何と言っても小豆クリームとショートケーキなのですが、この苺クリームも負けず劣らず素晴らしい！

This is Ichigo (strawberry) Cream, very new line-up from my favorite Japanese bakery in Boston, Japonaise. I was a bit afraid of that the custard looked a little too rich but it was just right sweetness. My favorites are Azuki (red bean) Cream and Strawberry Short Cakes but this Ichigo Cream is right up there!

　　インターナショナル・ストリング・トリオでケンブリッジのチャールズ・ホテルでの野外コンサートでした。ここはレガッタ・バーというボストンで一番有名なジャズクラブも入っている由緒正しいホテルで、私自身、ここで野外コンサートをするのは初めてです。こんな所で野外ライブなんてやってるものなんですねぇ。どうやら、この事を知らなかったのは我々だけではなかったようで、演奏する前は人もそんなにいませんでした。しかし、演奏が始まるやいなや、どこからともなく人が来るわ来るわ。席はたちまち埋まり、後の人は花壇に腰掛けていました。夏の日差しの中の野外コンサートは多くの人に囲まれ、大変に楽しいコンサートになりました。
International String Trio had an outside concert at the Charles Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts. There is the Regatta Bar, the most famous jazz club in Boston, in this hotel so I come here from time to time, but I did not know that they are holding a live concert in this open space. I think I was not the only one who did not know about this and there was almost nobody in there before we started the concert. Once we started playing, many people came in out of nowhere. The tables and benches were all taken in a short moment and the rest was sitting on the flower beds.

That was one fun concert under the sun and surrounded with a lot of people listening our music.

International String Trio @ Atlantic Beach Club

　インターナショナル・ストリング・トリオでロードアイランド州のニューポートに結婚式のギグに行ってきたのですが、まーヒドい濃霧でございました。式場は海岸沿いにあったのですが、海から来る霧でなーんも見えん。上の写真は、これでも昼間ですからね。式が進んでちょっと暗くなると、窓の外は真っ暗闇でした。

A wedding gig in Newport, Rhode Island with International String Trio. It was extremely foggy. The venue was located right by the beach and the thick fog coming from the ocean covered the whole town. The pic on the top was taken in the daytime by the way.

Fenway Station

　ギグに行く途中でございます。皆様、この駅がどこだか分かりますか。これ、松坂投手が移籍したボストン・レッドソックスのホームグラウンド、フェンウェイ・パークへの駅でございます。この駅はゲームがある日は押し合いへし合いの人で埋まります。私も卒業してからここら辺に住んでいたのですが、ある日、若かりし頃の一平はツアーに出ることになり、この駅ででかいベースと一緒に電車を待っておりました。ところが運悪く、それはゲームの日。この気の弱い一平には寿司詰め状態の電車にベースと共に突撃していくことなぞ当然できず、何本も何本も乗り損ね、ついには泣く泣く大枚をはたいてタクシーに乗ってバンドリーダーの家まで行った覚えがあります。

‥‥‥‥‥ああ、なんか、ヤなこと思い出しちった‥‥‥‥‥

I was at a train station on the way to a gig. This is Fenway station, which is the closest station to the Redsox's Fenway park, so on the game days, this station becomes deadly. People, including roaring drunks, are in everywhere especially when they won some important games. When I was young, I happened to be at this station on that kind of day. I had to go to my band leader's place and go to a tour to the Southern States. The whole station were packed in like sardines with the people who were dancing and yelling and singing. To my eyes, it was an apocalypse. Young Ippei was not really the Bruce-Willis-type of guy who could rush into danger. I had a big bass and a traveling bag too. I was pushed to every which way and some people were yelling at me like "hey Yo-Yo-Ma! Play something!!" Young (and flat- broke) Ippei finally had to give up taking a train and had to cough up a big money to take a cab.

..... Oh, I always remember this traumatic experience when I come to this station......

　ボストンでまたまたお友達の健司さんの所に転がり込んでおります。この日はウッディーズというピザ屋に来ました。我らが母校のバークリー音楽院のすぐ近くにあり、その絶品のピザで有名な所です。

　一言。ウマッ！ここのピザは本当に旨過ぎます。久方ぶりに来ましたが、昔と変わらぬこの旨さ。本当にありがたいですなあ。バークリーに行っていた頃は、ほとんど来た事がなかったんですよ（金がなかったから）。この写真に写ってるピザが旨かったっす。あれ、名前忘れちゃったな。ギリシャ風なんとかって言うとったような。ま、また来りゃいいか。

My buddy Kenji kindly put me up again in Boston. We came to the great pizza place called "Woody's," which is near our old college, Berklee College of Music.

One word, Deelish!! The pizzas here are just too good. I was so thankful to this restaurant for keeping the same quality as when I was a college student. To tell the truth, I came here only a few times when I was in the college --- I was flat-broke. The one on the pic was so good. I wonder what the name of this pizza was..... Greek something. Well, I'll come back again soon and find out.

　ボストンのチャールズタウンに来ました。ギターのマサさんとジャズ・デュオです。マサさんと演奏するのは本当に１年ぶりぐらいでした。お互いに髪がメッチャ長くなってて、再会した瞬間にバカウケしてまいました。

A function gig in Charlestown, Boston. It was a jazz duo with my old buddy Masa Sasaki. We had not played for a year or so and both of our hair had grown so long since the last time we played. We both burst into laughing when we saw each other.

I got my hearing back!

　日本で皆既日食が見れただぁ、曇ってて見れなかっただぁ、と市井の方々が一喜一憂している最中、海を越えたアメリカでは一人のミュージシャンが狂喜乱舞で裸踊りをしてました。そうです、この日ようやく私の左耳が聞こえるようになったのでございます。ほーっほっほっほっほ。お医者さんから、『徐々に聴力が戻るわけじゃなくて、ある日突然戻って来るよ』とは言われてたのですが、本当に突然戻ってきました。全治１９日。あと２週間ほどは治らないものと踏んでいましたが、この日にようやくその終止符を打つことになりました。

　皆様もくれぐれも耳の病気には気をつけて下さい。そうしないと、あなたは悪魔のような友達（特にミュージシャン）から、耳が聴こえないのをつけこまれて、オモチャにされ続けられることになります。

This is the day whole Japanese people were observing a total eclipse of the sun and having the time of their lives. On the same day, one musician across the ocean was also having the time of his life. Well, more than that. He went into ruptures and was dancing and singing madly. Yes, I got my hearing back on my left ear on this day. The doctor said that I was not going to get the hearing back bit by bit but it would come back all in once someday. He was right. That was exactly how it happened. Nineteen days to heal. I was not expecting to get it back for another couple of weeks or so but that was it for the long scary days.

My friends, please be careful on any kind of disease on your ears. Because your evil friends, especially musicians, will make fun of you and make a toy of you and and.......

WaFoo @ Greenbelt Nature Center

　WaFooでスタッテン島のグリーンベルト・ネイチャー・センターでコンサートがありました。グリーンベルトとはスタッテン島にある広大な土地を有する都市公園で、マンハッタンのセントラル・パークの実に３倍半の大きさの公園です。その中心部にある自然博物館ではグリーンベルトの豊かな自然を紹介しており、その博物館の中庭でコンサートを開きました。

WaFoo had a concert at the Greenbelt Nature Center in Staten Island, New York. The Greenbelt is one of the largest all-urban parks in America and it is three and a half times bigger than the Central Park in Manhattan. Right on the center of the park, there is a small museum which introduces the rich nature of the Greenbelt and we played at the yard of that.

ここに書かれているのは松尾芭蕉の有名な『古池や蛙飛びこむ水の音』の英訳です。なんでしょう、自然を紹介する博物館だからでしょうか。この芭蕉の句と蛙の銅像が妙にバックの木々に合っております。 This poem is written by one of the most famous poet in Japan, Matsuo Basho. Well, maybe because this place is surrounded with nature, this poem and the frog statue fits really well with the woods.
