Mari Tabata's recording @ Newbury Sound

　前日は菊池健司さんの家でご厄介になり、今日は朝からローカル電車でレコーディング・スタジオのある、ボストン郊外のウィルミントンに向かいました。電車もローカルなら景色もローカルです。食いしん坊万歳に出て来るような風景です。松岡修造と一緒に新鮮な海の幸に舌鼓を打ちたくなりました。

I stayed at my buddy Kenji's hang last night and headed to the recording studio in Wilmington, the suburb of Boston, by a local train. The area was very rural and I walked from the station to the studio enjoying the beautiful views.
　今日のレコーディングは『ニューバリー・サウンド』というスタジオで、健司さんの生徒の田畑万莉ちゃんのレコーディングです。少し緊張した口調で『今日はよろしくお願いします』と丁寧に言われました。うーむ、なぜ緊張しているのでしょうか。もしかすると、私がすんごい巧いプレイヤーだと勘違いしているのではないのでしょうか。実はなんちゃってミュージシャンで、周りの人にゴマをすってヘコヘコして仕事を貰ってるなんて知ったら、幻滅するだろうなぁ。バレないようにするのに、こっちが緊張するわい。今日のメンツはドラムに三季ちゃん、そしてキーボードにエンリケと、勝手知ったるいつものメンバーです。健司さんも彼女のために最高の人選をしましたね。この二人がサポーティング・メンバーだったら、最高に弾きやすくしてくれる上に、彼女の可能性を最大限まで引き出してくれることでしょう（と、これはゴマすりではありませんからね、念のため）。『スター・アイズ』『Ａ列車で行こう』『上を向いて歩こう』の３曲を録り、健司さんの曲も数曲録ってレコーディングが終了しました。気持ち良くできたレコーディングでございました。

The recording was for Mari Tabata, a student of Kenji, at Newbury Sound Studio. She greeted me really politely in Japanese and maybe she was a bit nervous. Well, she might be thinking I was some kind of a great player or something. I should be nervous to live up to her expectation. The supporting musicians were Miki on drums and Enrique on keyboard. I think Kenji picked the best supporting members for her recording. It was impossible not to get easy to record with these two musicians supporting, plus they will draw out her latent abilities to the limit.

We did three tunes, which were "Star Eyes," "Take the A Train" & "Sukiyaki," and also we finished with taking a few tracks on Kenji's original compositions. I felt really good on the recording.

　聞くと万莉ちゃんは、なんと大学受験の真っ最中だそうで、アメリカと日本で何校も受験するそうです。ハー、大変だ。まだ自分が何になりたいのか、どういう方向に進みたいのかが分からないと言っていましたが、そんなに悩まないで大丈夫だよ。もしも将来、突然まったく違う方向に進みたくなったら、その時にまた勉強し直せばいいことだしね。人生一度だけだよ。自分が一番やりたいこと、自分が一番幸せになれると思う方向に進んで下さい。万莉ちゃん、受験も音楽も頑張ってね。

Mari said she was studying hard to get into a university, but also said she herself was not sure which path she wanted to take. Not to worry. Even if you are going to take the different path in the future from the path you decide to take right now, you can restudy from that moment on. We all have only one life. Please choose to be what you want to be and choose the way you will have the happiest life for yourself.

Mari, I really wish you good luck with your music and your future.
