Tako-yaki & Okonomi-yaki

The story goes back to a month ago. My buddy Hara, an Italian guy, looked at the dumplings at the Thai restaurant where we always play and said "tako-yaki, tako-yaki!" That is the name of my soul food which I don't hear from an Italian guy too often. I raised my left eyebrow and asked as if I were the bad guy in "Gladiator" or "Troy."

"Hey you Roman, where did you hear that name?!"

He said there was a takeout place which serves tako-yaki as well as okonomi-yaki, which is another favorite food of mine. I had never even dreamed of getting them in New York, the place where many miles away from my mother land....

I unfortunately did not have a chance to make a visit to the place just because when I go to East Village, I alway go there for gigs and am always stuffed to the neck with Thai food because the owner of the restaurant treat us really well. Yesterday was different though. I went to East Village to check out the art work at a library. I was plenty hungry, had a lot of room to stuff up.

The name of the place was "Otafuku." I was first surprised by the closeness from the Thai restaurant I play --- maybe only 2 minutes away. It was like I finally found my bluebird of happiness. I always had it so close, but I did not see it. I had the combination B which had both tako-yaki and okonomi-yaki. It's 9 bucks and very affordable. They start making after you place the order so you have to wait 10 minutes or so but you'll get a fresh one. I took it out and went straight back to home in Brooklyn.

I thought I was going to die because it was so good. It took me one hour to come back by train, ten minutes to warm it with a pan, and two minutes to finish eating. The portion was not small; I just forgot to chew and swallowed everything because it was too delicious. That was great. I think I am going to be a regular.
